Martin Fassbender (born March 24, 1856 in Steinenbrück ; † December 29, 1943 ) was a German agricultural advocate, professor of cooperatives , Catholic publicist and member of the Center Party .

education

Faßbender attended grammar school in Koblenz and began his studies as a priestly candidate . He then studied philosophy , economics and agriculture in Bonn and then did his doctorate in Leipzig . As a result, he made numerous trips through Germany and Austria.

In 1880 he joined the cooperative system and was employed by Friedrich Wilhelm Raiffeisen . He lived in the house of the Raiffeisen family and planned to marry the eldest daughter Amalie . This was forbidden by her father and it can be assumed that he therefore officially terminated the employment after two years by mutual agreement. However, there were unbridgeable differences with Raiffeisen about the further direction of the cooperatives. While Faßbender wanted to run it according to entrepreneurial principles, Friedrich Wilhelm Raiffeisen planned around this time to continue it as a Christian charitable organization or even as a brotherhood .

Agricultural and cooperative organizations

Later Faßbender was general secretary of the Westphalian Farmers' Association , then second director of the AG Landwirtschaftliche Central Loan Fund for Germany. In the period that followed, Fassbender was the association director of the Association of Rural Cooperatives in the Rhine Province .

University professor

From 1899 Faßbender was a lecturer at the agricultural academy in Bonn-Poppelsdorf . From 1899 to 1901 he was a committee member of the Zentralgenossenschaftskasse. Between 1906 and 1915 he was professor for trade and cooperative studies at the Agricultural University in Berlin . He was also a member of the advisory board of the Central Office for People's Welfare.

publicist

Faßbender was the author of various monographs and numerous articles on agricultural policy, cooperative systems, rural welfare and similar topics. He was a co-founder and co-editor of the population policy magazine The Coming Sex . From 1904 Faßbender wrote the daily newspaper Der Tag mainly on current topics of Catholicism. In parts of the public, an article in 1907 in Corrispondenza Romana, which is close to Catholic integralism , led to criticism. He also wrote for the Catholic magazines Hochland and Allgemeine Rundschau . He was also involved in Catholic associations and was chairman of the Caritas Association in Berlin.

He wrote the first biography about Friedrich Wilhelm Raiffeisen.

Political mandates

Politically, Faßbender belonged to the Center Party. Between 1907 and 1918 he was a member of the Reichstag as a member of the constituency of Cologne 3 ( Bergheim - Euskirchen ). From 1903 to 1918 Faßbender was a member of the Prussian House of Representatives . He was then a member of the Prussian constitutional assembly from 1919 to 1921 and then a member of the Prussian state parliament until 1932 .
