M.) degree from Yale University Law School . After the assessor examination , Kriele worked as a lawyer and as a research assistant at Hans J. Wolff in Münster. Following his doctorate in 1962 with a dissertation on the criteria of justice , he received his habilitation there in 1966 with a paper on the theory of law enforcement . From 1967 to 1996, Kriele was full professor of general political science and public law at the University of Cologne .

Kriele is co-founder and editor of the Zeitschrift für Rechtsspektiven (ZRP) . Before the association of German constitutional law teachers , he reported at the 1970 conference in Speyer on the subject of the democratic principle in the Basic Law .

In 1973 Kriele represented the Federal Government in the dispute over the Eastern Treaties before the Federal Constitutional Court . From 1976 to 1988 he was a judge at the constitutional court for the state of North Rhine-Westphalia . In 1988 he was awarded the Great Federal Cross of Merit. Kriele has been retired since 1996 . Under the influence of the works of the anthroposophist Rudolf Steiner and especially his pupil Valentin Tomberg , Kriele converted from the Protestant to the Catholic Church. He was involved in the "angel books" submitted by his wife Alexa. Because of his public statements on topics of faith and esotericism and for the association for the promotion of psychological knowledge of human nature , he has been criticized several times.
Because of his appeal to support the Contras in Nicaragua , he was threatened with expulsion from the SPD in 1985.

Kriele has six children, two from his first marriage to Christel, four from his second marriage to Alexa. Alexa Kriele became known to a wider public as a medium or as an "angel worker".
