Martin Marinac (born July 15, 1979 in Gaschurn ) is a former Austrian ski racer and today's trainer . He won the overall ranking of the European Cup in the 2001/02 season and competed in the World Cup until 2006 , where he was among the top ten in three races. He has been a trainer since 2007.

biography

Martin Marinac attended the ski school in Schruns and then the commercial school in Stams . He drove the first children's races at the ski club in his home town of Gaschurn and achieved some successes in the junior division, including several podium places at Austrian school and youth championships in alpine skiing, but also a victory in the giant slalom of the Austrian youth championships in snow gliding . After numerous starts in FIS races from the 1994/95 season and his inclusion in the squad of the Austrian Ski Association (ÖSV) in 1997, Marinac took part in the European Cup races for the first time in January 1998 . He soon concentrated exclusively on the technical disciplines of slalom and giant slalom and, after his first podium places and victories in FIS races, won points in the European Cup for the first time towards the end of the 1999/2000 season. In the next winter he was already in the top 20 several times. At his only start at a junior world championship, the slalom of 1999 , he was eliminated in the first round.

After a second place at the Austrian Championships in 2001 in the giant slalom, Marinac achieved the breakthrough in the European Cup in the 2001/02 season . The first top 10 result in the first race of the season was followed a week later with third place in the Damüls giant slalom, the first podium. Finally, by the end of the season, he achieved another six podium places and numerous top 10 results, with which he won both the giant slalom and the overall standings and was third in the slalom classification. Thanks to his good performance in the European Cup, Marinac made his first World Cup appearance on January 20, 2002 in the slalom on the Ganslernhang in Kitzbühel . With the high starting number 55, he immediately achieved tenth place. In the following winter of 2002/03 Marinac was part of the ÖSV World Cup team. With a 14th place in the giant slalom in Sölden (his best World Cup result in this discipline) and 12th place in the slalom in Park City , he achieved two good results at the start of the season. This was followed by less appealing performances - he also missed the qualification for the second run several times - until he reached sixth place in the night slalom on the Planai in Schladming on January 28, 2003 with the fastest time in the second run , thus achieving his best World Cup result.

From the 2003/04 season Marinac only started in the slalom in the World Cup and was also increasingly present in the European Cup. His best World Cup result this winter was ninth place in Flachau on January 4th, 2004, another three times he was among the fastest 15. However, he was never able to establish himself consistently among the absolute top of the world and never came in the top 20 in the Slalom World Cup Team he was therefore never able to qualify for participation in world championships or the Olympic Games. In the 2004/05 and 2005/06 seasons Marinac was only one of the fastest 15 World Cup races and also achieved several top 20 results. In the European Cup he celebrated his only victory on March 14, 2005 in the Roccaraso slalom . Due to lack of success Marinac was dismissed from the ÖSV squad in 2006. He tried to get back to the top of the world at his own expense, drove several European Cup races in the winter of 2006/07 and got the chance to start again in the World Cup in the Alta Badia slalom , but retired in the first round of this race. In February 2007 he finally ended his active career in ski racing.

Marinac had already trained as a state-certified ski instructor during his active career. After retiring from ski racing, he was a trainer in the Liechtenstein Ski Association from 2007 , initially for the school squad and later as a technical trainer for the women's World Cup group. In 2011 he switched to the Austrian Ski Federation as a coach of the men's World Cup technical group.
