Martin Schmidt (theologian, 1883)

Martin Schmidt (born November 24, 1883 in Miehlen im Taunus ; † June 6, 1964 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a German Protestant pastor , theologian and university professor .

Life

After graduating from high school at Rudi-Stephan-Gymnasium in Worms, Schmidt studied Protestant theology at the universities of Leipzig , Halle , Tübingen , Bonn and Aberdeen as well as at the Herborn Theological Seminary , which he obtained with the academic degree of Dr. theol. completed. As a student he became a member of the Leipziger , Halle and Tübingen Wingolf .

After his ordination , he was appointed pastor in Holzhausen an der Haide in 1910 . In 1918 he moved to the Ringkirche in Wiesbaden , later to the Marktkirche , until he was appointed professor for Protestant religious studies at the simultaneous Pedagogical Academy in Frankfurt am Main and a lecturer at the University of Marburg . After the National Socialists came to power in 1933, he was given a forced leave of absence and was deposed in 1934. Only from 1937 onwards did he take on occasional church assignments.

In 1946 he was entrusted with the administration of the first professorship at the Theological Seminary in Herborn and, from 1948, received teaching assignments at the University of Frankfurt and at the vocational education institute there. In 1954 he also took on a teaching position at the University of Marburg and was retired in 1957.

Between 1947 and 1949 he chaired the constitutional committee of the Evangelical Church in Hesse and Nassau and played a key role in the creation and elaboration of the church order. Furthermore, from 1946 to 1963 he was editor and editor of the church gazette “Weg und Truth”.

In 1949 the University of Marburg awarded Schmidt an honorary theological doctorate .
