Martin Seeley

Martin Alan Seeley (born May 29, 1954 in Portsmouth ) is a British Anglican theologian . On November 20, 2014, he was appointed Bishop of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich in the Church of England .

Life

Seeley studied Geography and later theology at the Jesus College of Cambridge University . In 1976 he obtained a Bachelor of Arts (BA) there, then in 1978 the Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.). In preparation for his priesthood, he attended Ripon Theological College, a theological college of the Anglican Church, in Cuddesdon and the Union Theological Seminary in New York City , where he graduated in 1978 as a Master of Sacred Theology (STM).

In 1978 he was ordained a deacon ; In 1979 he was ordained a priest . He began his priestly career from 1978 to 1980 as vicar ( curate ) at St Peter's Church in Bottesford in the county of Lincolnshire in the diocese of Lincoln ; at the same time he was responsible for the communities in Ashby and Scunthorpe . He then went back to the United States , where he served as vicar ( curate ) at the Church of the Epiphany in Manhattan , New York City, and as deputy. Director ( Assistant Director ) of Trinity Church in Manhattan acted. From 1985 to 1990 he was then director and executive director of the Thompson Center, an ecumenical training institution for lay people and clergy in St Louis in the US state of Missouri . He then returned to Great Britain, where he worked from 1990 to 1996 as Selection Secretary at the Advisory Board of Ministry.

From 1996 to 2000 he was pastor ( Vicar ) in the Diocese of London in the district of Tower Hamlets on the Isle of Dogs peninsula in the East End of London. This post was held by his predecessor as Bishop of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich, John Dennis , the 8th Bishop of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich. His main focus there was working with young people and religious instruction . At that time he worked closely with youth workers, social workers and employment agencies.

In September 2006 he was appointed Principal of Westcott House Theological College, a college of the Church of England in the liberal tradition of Anglo-Catholicism , in Cambridge . Since 2008 he was Honorary canons ( Honorary Canon , Canon) at the Ely Cathedral . He was also President of the Cambridge Theological Federation (2012-2014).

On November 20, 2014, his appointment as 11th Bishop of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich in the Church of England was officially announced. He is as Bishop of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich successor Nigel Stock , the 2013 in November bishop at Lambeth ( Bishop at Lambeth was) in the Church of England. He will officially take up his post in April 2015 after Easter . His episcopal ordination will take place on May 14, 2015 at Westminster Abbey .

Personal

Seeley is married. His wife is Reverend Jutta Brueck; she is a pastor with the title "Priest in Charge" at St James' Church, Wulfstan Way, Cambridge . The marriage had two children, a son and a daughter. Seeley's hobbies include cooking and music ; he is an active tenor saxophonist .
