Martin Seitz

Martin Seitz (born April 21, 1895 in Passau , † March 27, 1988 in Passau) was an internationally known gem cutter (stone cutting artist).

Martin Seitz was born as the son of the legal adviser Martin Seitz and his wife Anna (née Naager) in Passau. His mother came from a Passau family of painters.

Seitz took part in the First World War. In 1916 he was seriously wounded on the Somme . He suffered from his war injuries until his death. As an ensign and lieutenant on the Western Front , he was awarded the Iron Cross I and II.

After an exchange of prisoners, he began studying at the local arts and crafts school in Lucerne in 1917 . From 1918 he took part in historical studies for a few semesters. From 1920 he studied at the Technical University and the School of Applied Arts in Munich and also in the sculpture class of Joseph Wackerle , who recognized his talent for bas-relief early on. In 1922 Seitz passed the teaching examination.

In 1925 Seitz married the Passau citizen's daughter and weaver Charlotte Bayberger, with whom he had two daughters.

Seitz was one of the most important gem cutters. As early as 1927 he had his first exhibition in the Grassimuseum Leipzig . Further exhibitions in various European cities followed.

From 1928 until his retirement he also taught with interruptions as an art teacher at the Oberrealschule Passau, today's Adalbert-Stifter-Gymnasium .

The Martin-Seitz-Straße in Passau was named after Seitz.
