Martin Spiegelberg

Martin Spiegelberg (born March 23, 1955 in Hamburg ; † July 3, 2020 in Munich ) was a German crime writer and jazz musician ( guitar , trumpet , composition ).

Live and act

Spiegelberg, who grew up in Marburg and Stuttgart , worked as a guitarist and bassist from an early age . Since 1975 he has been part of the band Gipsy Nova by Kitty Winter , with whom he released the albums Feel It (1978) and Limelight Suite (1979). He also played at the Collegium Barbarorum , in his own quintet, which he led with Fred Breck, and at the Stuttgart Smallstars with Jeanette McLeod . From 1982 he worked as a trumpeter with Tyree Glenn Junior and as a guitarist in the Chris Haskins Band . From 1983 he accompanied the chanson singer Hana Hegerová and played in the Wolfgang Lauer crew.

In 1985 Sammy Drechsel brought him to the Munich Lach- und Schießgesellschaft as a musician and composer , where he stayed until 1998. He set texts by Werner Schneyder , Henning Venske and Klaus Peter Schreiner to music . He then worked again as a freelance jazz musician, for example with the Art Jazz Trio , the Flying Dixie Dogs or Alexander's jazz band , but increasingly concentrated on writing .

Spiegelberg mainly wrote detective novels and crime short stories. As a jazz musician, he can also be heard on Roger Röger's albums and a CD edition for his crime thriller Die Seele des Puma . Marcus A. Woelfle presented rare and out of print recordings of him in the RadioJazznacht on BR-Klassik on July 26, 2020.

Prizes and awards

Spiegelberg won the special prize at the young jazz competition in Nagold in 1976 with Kitty Winters Gipsy Nova . In 2005 he was awarded the German short crime prize by Tatort Eifel for his story Was Anderes . Furthermore, in 2010 he received fourth prize in the short crime competition of the city of Wardenburg for the story Shot from the Fog .
