Martin Vogel (musicologist)

Martin Vogel (born March 23, 1923 in Frankfurt (Oder) , † April 1, 2007 in Bonn ) was a German university professor of musicology at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität in Bonn.

Life

Martin Vogel was the son of the businessman Walter Vogel and his wife Margarete geb. Maess. After serving in the war and imprisonment, he began studying musicology in Bonn. In 1954 he received his doctorate with the topic The Number Seven in speculative music theory , in 1959 he completed his habilitation with a paper on The Enharmonics of the Greeks . Since 1967 he taught as a professor for systematic musicology in Bonn. Vogel had been married to Hannelore Schlemmer since 1960.

One focus of his work in research and teaching was dealing with the fundamentals of musical harmony . The Vogelsche tone lattice complements the dual system of Arthur von Oettingen to the natural seventh and proposes a formula based on a weighted prime factorization for the quantitative assessment of Akkordkonsonanzen ago. He designed and built enharmonic horns, tubas and trumpets as well as guitars in pure tuning. Vogel had a two- manual harpsichord built, enharmonically tunable using the ray principle , as well as a 72-note harmonium with four manuals, and developed an automatic circuit through which the "correct" fifths , thirds and sevenths are automatically set when the keys are lowered .

Another focus of his research was the origin of music. Based on the Greek Enharmonics with its quarter tones and early polyphony , Vogel came to the realization through the oldest rock carvings in Yemen and Eritrea that decisive early cultural achievements such as metalworking , long-distance trade , animal husbandry and music were closely related to the domestication of the donkey as the earliest riding and pack animal of man. In this context, Vogel also saw the emergence of monotheistic cults with a donkey god who was worshiped under various names such as Seth , Iao, Yahweh , Amun .

Vogel gained important information from the words and names. With an abundance of etymological excursions, he gives an example of linguistic paleontology and opened a scientific discussion that transcends disciplinary boundaries about the dissemination of cultural achievements through migration from Africa to Europe . Numerous plays written by him, including opera libretti, show Vogel's interest in music theater .
