Mary Cain (born May 3, 1996 ) is an American middle and long distance runner .

Career

Over 1500 m , she was sixth at the World Junior Athletics Championships in Barcelona in 2012 . The following year, she qualified as US runner-up for the 2013 World Athletics Championships in Moscow, where she was tenth.

In 2014 she set the current U20 indoor world record over 1000 m with 2: 35.80 minutes and became US indoor champion over 1500 m. At the Junior World Championships in Eugene , she won over 3000 m .

In 2019, she raised serious allegations against the recently closed Nike Oregon Project , which she joined in November 2013, and its director Alberto Salazar . Salazar systematically urged her to lose weight and forced her to take birth control pills and diuretics . As a result, she suffered five broken bones, her menstrual cycle was suspended for three years, and eventually she thought about suicide . Salazar's former assistant coach Steve Magness confirmed the allegations.
