Mary Elizabeth Scanlon CBE (born May 25, 1947 in Dundee ) is a Scottish politician and member of the Conservative Party .

Scanlon attended Craigo Secondary School in Montrose and then went to Dundee University , where she graduated with a Masters in Economics and Politics and a Diploma in Human Resource Management. Between 1983 and 1988 she taught economics and management at Perth College and then moved to the Dundee Institute of Technology until 1994 . Most recently she was a lecturer at Inverness College at the University of the Highlands and Islands until 1999 .

Political career

For the first time Scanlon appeared in the general election in 1992 to national elections. In her constituency of North East Fife , however, she received only the second highest number of votes and thus missed the entry into the British House of Commons . In the 1997 general election , she applied for the direct mandate of Inverness East, Nairn and Lochaber , but received only the fourth highest number of votes.

In the general election in 1999 Scanlon ran in the constituency of Inverness East, Nairn and Lochaber , but was able to unite only 14.6% of the vote. Since Scanlon was also on the regional electoral list of the Conservatives for the electoral region Highlands and Islands , she moved as one of seven regional candidates in the newly created Scottish Parliament as a result of the election result . In the parliamentary elections in 2003 , she again clearly missed the direct mandate of Inverness East, Nairn and Lochaber, but defended her parliamentary seat for the Highlands and Islands.

On March 21, 2006, the member of the Moray constituency , Margaret Ewing , died, which is why by-elections were held in this constituency on April 27, 2006. In order to run for this election, Scanlon gave back her mandate, which was taken over by her party colleague David Petrie until the end of the legislative period . In the by-election, Scanlon received only the second highest number of votes. Richard Lochhead from SNP won the direct mandate . Scanlon again applied for the mandate of the constituency of Moray in the 2007 parliamentary elections , but clearly missed it. On the other hand, she regained her previously given list mandate for the Highlands and Islands and moved back into parliament. She defended her mandate in the 2011 parliamentary elections . Scanlon did not run for the general election in 2016 and left the Scottish Parliament at the end of the electoral term.

Scanlon has been the Conservative Party’s health policy spokesperson for many years. In the shadow cabinet of the Conservatives she was designated as Minister of Health.
