history
On June 1, 1803, William Mason, a veteran of the American Revolutionary War , bought around 640 acres (256 hectares ) of land in what is now Mason at auction . In 1815 he put 16 plots on this land and named the place "Palmyra". Another 40 parcels were measured in 1832, two years after Mason's death, as determined by Mason's last will. When entering the cadastre , the name of the place was given as "Palmyra".
The United States Postal Administration received petitions from residents of the town in 1835 to correct the name. The United States Postal Service led the place as "Kirkwood", which was probably due to a mix-up with the name of the postmaster at the time, William Kirkwood, in the list of places of the post office. However, since there was already a Palmyra Township in Ohio, the name was changed to "Mason" in honor of its founder.
Mason remained a small, agricultural village for the next 125 years. In 1970, the year before it was incorporated as a city , the place had fewer than 5,700 inhabitants.
