Matrine is an alkaloid found in plants of the genus Sophora . It is pharmacologically active as an agonist of opioid receptors and has anti-carcinogenic effects.

Occurrence

Legume ( Sophora flavescens )

Matrine is the main alkaloid of the legume Sophora flavescens . In traditional Chinese medicine , the dried root of this plant is called Ku Shen .

effect

Pharmacological effect

Matrine has strong anti-tumor activity. In vitro and in vivo antiproliferative and proapoptotic effects could be demonstrated. It also has an antiarrhythmic , antihistaminic , cough suppressant , antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effect .

Further areas of application

In laboratory tests as well as in the field, acaricidal and insecticidal effects of Matrin have been observed. It can be used for greenhouse plants and cruciferous vegetables against lice, mites and a number of insect larvae. It affects the central nervous system , which blocks breathing and impairs movements. In addition, it was found that matrine acts as a feed protection against the Formosa termites. Matrin also acts as a nematicide, for example against the pine wood nematode ( Bursaphelenchus xylophilus ).
