Matthew Thomas Connolly (born September 24, 1987 in Barnet , London ) is an English football player . The defender has played for Cardiff City since August 2012 .

Connolly went through the youth division of Arsenal FC and initially played for the reservists. After he was promoted to captain of the second team at Arsenal in September 2006, he made his debut in the first team at the League Cup on October 24, 2006 . On November 23, 2006, Arsenal announced that Connolly would be loaned to Bournemouth AFC until January 2, 2007 . He played a total of seven games for Bournemouth (five in the league, two in the FA Cup ) and scored his first goal as a professional. Connolly returned to Arsenal as planned in January 2007 and played there again in the League Cup. For the 2007/08 season he was loaned to Colchester United , where he was originally supposed to stay the entire season. On January 2, 2008, however, he moved to the Queens Park Rangers.

After spending the second half of the 2011/12 season at Reading FC , he moved to Cardiff City in August 2012 , where he signed a three-year contract until June 30, 2015. In a good five and a half years Connolly played 146 competitive games for Cardiff before he was completely left out in the 2018/19 and 2019/20 seasons due to injury and was sometimes no longer listed in the professional squad.
