Max Fürst (born October 15, 1846 in Traunstein , † August 30, 1917 in Munich ) was a German history painter and local researcher .

Life

Max Fürst was the son of a Messner from Traunstein . On April 25, 1863, he enrolled at the Munich Royal Academy of Arts for the class of antiquities. Under the influence of his teacher and patron Johann von Schraudolph , he turned to religious painting. As early as 1869 he received the annual prize and the silver medal of the Munich Academy for the painting "Moses protects the daughters of Jethro". In 1872 he went to Rome to study, where he painted, among other things, the oil painting "To the catacomb". After his return he settled in Munich and subsequently created numerous altar paintings and wall paintings for churches, mainly in Upper Bavaria . His most extensive commission was probably 30 ceiling paintings for the St. Oswalds parish church in Traunstein (1904–1909).

Max Fürst had been a member of the Association for Christian Art since 1876 and, from 1883, its long-term deputy chairman. In addition to his work as a painter, he wrote the "Biographical Lexicon for the Area between Inn and Salzach" in 1901, as well as several local and art historical writings that appeared in various newspapers and magazines. In 1884 he published a little book about the history of the St. Oswald Church in Traunstein and in 1918 the text "King Ludwig I of Bavaria and his buildings".

In recognition of the services that Max Fürst acquired as a painter and local writer, his hometown Traunstein made him an honorary citizen in 1909. As a co-founder of the St. Georg Association in Traunstein, he later became an honorary member.
