Max Krause (entrepreneur)

Max Krause (born March 17, 1838 in Treuenbrietzen , † October 16, 1913 in Steglitz ; full name Max Georg Wilhelm Krause ) was a German entrepreneur , industrialist , Royal Prussian Kommerzienrat , patron and u. a. Investor in the construction of the Karlshorst villa and country house colony . To support his up to 650 workers in social policy, he built 18 welfare institutions. In 1877 he created the term paper equipment .

Life

Max Krause was raised in the Pichel orphanage in Burg near Magdeburg . The apprenticeship in the paper shop Joh. Friedr. Deneke in Magdeburg, where he met Friedrich Wilhelm Abel (1840–1890), who was also an apprentice there and with whom he remained friendly, followed in 1859 by field work for the Hoesch paper mill in Düren and in 1865 by founding his own paper mill with a capital of 2000 thalers.

From 1877 until his death he was chairman of the paper industry association (PIV) and the association for customs issues in the paper processing industry and the paper trade, founded in 1902 .

Together with the paper industry association and the association of German colored paper manufacturers as well as their members, he managed to raise the funds to purchase the approximately 11,500 pieces of colored paper collection of the Hanover-based dental technician Ernst Seeger (1840–1911). In 1901 the collection was transferred to the German Museum of Books and Writing .

In 1904 Max Krause left the necessary land for the 1907 built Stadtbadt Steglitz an der Bergstrasse for an undervalued purchase price of 19 marks per square meter.

The tomb in the cemetery IV of the congregation Jerusalems- und Neue Kirche in Berlin-Kreuzberg was executed according to the plans of the architect Bruno Schmitz with plastic jewelry by the sculptor Franz Metzner .

Entrepreneur

Due to his Europe-wide activity as a traveling salesman, he was encouraged to implement a concept for the marketing of stationery and the associated envelopes. For the first time he put together packaging units for letterheads and envelopes and delivered them in cassettes or folders . The scope of delivery was expanded to include different colors, paper with watermarks, monogram embossing and additions with vignettes .

In 1877, after an internal company competition, the technical term paper equipment was introduced for its products and adopted by the paper industry. After initial reservations on the part of the paper industry and sales difficulties, the system prevailed across Europe. a. Works in Berlin, Sakrau (Silesia) and Calbe (Saale), which were lost due to the Second World War .

With the Yellow Series of 1924, the advertising slogan “Write to me, write to you, write on MK paper” was introduced at the same time for branded paper.

After production was resumed in Wiesbaden in 1952 and then in Mainz, the company had to cease business operations in 1973 due to liquidity problems, and production and sales were transferred to Baier & Schneider in Heilbronn .
