Max Walter Schulz (born October 31, 1921 in Scheibenberg / Erzgebirge , † November 15, 1991 in Berlin ) was a German writer .

Life

Max Walter Schulz was the son of an employee . After attending elementary school and high school , he was drafted into the Wehrmacht , as a member of which he took part in the Second World War from 1939 to 1945 . He fell into American captivity , from which he returned to the Soviet occupation zone in 1945. After working as a laborer and new teacher in 1945/46 , he studied pedagogy at the University of Leipzig from 1946 to 1949 . During this time he joined the SED . From 1950 to 1957 he worked as a teacher . From 1957 to 1959 he studied at the "Johannes R. Becher" literary institute in Leipzig , where he was promoted to director in 1964. He held this post until 1983, when he took over the position of editor-in-chief of the literary magazine " Sinn und Form "; In 1990 he retired.

Max Walter Schulz was the author of novels , short stories , reviews and essays . His narrative works are typical examples of the literature of the “ Bitterfelder Weg ”, in particular “We are not dust in the wind”, the first part of a planned novel cycle, achieved great success with the GDR readership. Schulz's critical and quasi-official statements about the young authors of the time were important for the development of GDR literature since the end of the 1960s.

Max Walter Schulz was a member of the GDR Writers' Union ; from 1962 to 1963 he was its secretary and from 1969 to 1990 vice-president. From 1967 to 1969 Schulz was a candidate and then until 1971 a member of the SED district leadership in Leipzig . In 1969 he was elected to the German Academy of the Arts in East Berlin . He received u. a. The following awards: 1963 the literature price of the FDGB , 1964 and 1980 a national price of the GDR , 1969 the title of professor , 1978 the patriotic order of merit , 1986 the honor bar for the patriotic order of merit in gold and 1987 an honorary doctorate from the University of Leipzig. In October 1963 he accompanied Johannes Bobrowski to the meeting of Group 47 in Saulgau and read from We are not dust in the wind .
