Prince Maximilian of Saxony , full name Maximilian Maria Joseph Anton Johann Baptist Johann Evangelista Ignaz Augustin Xaver Aloys Johann Nepomuk January Hermenegild Agnellus Paschalis of Saxony (born April 13, 1759 in Dresden ; † January 3, 1838 there ) was designated heir to the throne from 1827 to 1830 of the Kingdom of Saxony .

Life

Maximilian was the youngest son of the Saxon Elector Friedrich Christian and his wife Maria Antonia of Bavaria .

Since all of Maximilian's older brothers, both Princes Karl and Joseph of Saxony, who died at a young age, as well as Elector Friedrich August III. and Prince Elector Anton did not father any viable male descendants, Maximilian was second in line to the throne of the Electorate and later Kingdom of Saxony in 1796 . When his brother Friedrich August, who had been the first king of Saxony since 1806, died in 1827, Maximilian took the first place in the kingdom's line of succession.

In the course of the unrest of 1830/31, Maximilian declared on September 13, 1830, his renunciation of the succession in favor of his eldest son Friedrich August , who was also appointed co-regent of the aged King Anton. After he was able to experience how his son ascended the throne after Anton's death in 1836 and he gave him Weesenstein Castle , Maximilian died about a year and a half later and was buried in the Wettiner crypt of the Catholic Court Church in Dresden .

Marriages and offspring

His first marriage was on April 22, 1792 in Parma ( per procurationem ) and on May 9, 1792 in Dresden (in person) with Princess Carolina Maria Theresia Josephina (born November 22, 1770 in Parma; † March 1, 1804 in Dresden), daughter of Duke Ferdinand of Parma, Piacenza and Guastalla from his marriage to Archduchess Maria Amalia of Austria . The couple had the following seven offspring:

21 years after the death of his first wife, he married at the age of 66 on October 15, 1825 in Lucca (per procurationem) and on November 7, 1825 in Dresden (in persona) the 43 years younger niece of his first wife, Princess Maria Luisa Carlotta (1802–1857), daughter of King Ludwig of Etruria from his marriage to the Infanta Maria Luisa of Spain . The couple had no common offspring.
