Maximilian von Steinsdorf (born December 10, 1808 in Munich , † April 18, 1889 there ) was a Bavarian major general .

Life

Steinsdorf was the son of a councilor in the State Ministry of Foreign Affairs . After attending grammar school and the cadet corps , he joined the 1st Artillery Regiment of the Bavarian Army as a Junker on August 21, 1828 . In 1829, Steinsdorf was assigned to the War Ministry for one year to translate technical memoirs from foreign languages. With his promotion to lieutenant in mid-July 1830, he came to the 2nd Artillery Regiment in Würzburg , but returned to his main regiment after just one year. Steinsdorf then worked for the command in Augsburg from 1832 until his release for the purpose of transferring to Greek services .

At first Steinsdorf acted as an adjutant to General von Heideck and in 1834 took over as captain of the Ouvrier company in Nauplia . In October 1835 he became adjutant to the War Minister von Schmaltz and after a position as a consultant in the War Ministry, the Greek King Otto appointed him his orderly officer in 1840 . In 1841 Steinsdorf accompanied the later King Maximilian II Joseph on his journey to the Orient.

After the revolution , Steinsdorf returned to Bavaria and on October 21, 1843 he was employed again in the army as a first lieutenant in the 1st artillery regiment. After various stations, he joined the Army General Staff at the end of March 1848 and served as an adjutant to the Quartermaster General von Jeetze and von der Mark. On October 22, 1861, Steinsdorf was appointed Colonel Commander of the 2nd Artillery Regiment and in the years to come he was in charge of the artillery firing and maneuvering exercises on the Lechfeld . With his promotion to major general on May 20, 1866, he was appointed commander of the Marienberg Fortress , and in this capacity Steinsdorf was able to prove himself in the defense during the war against Prussia . On January 8, 1869, he was given command of the 2nd Field Artillery Brigade, which was being set up . However, due to illness, he retired on February 1, 1870 .

For his work, Steinsdorf was awarded the Commander-in-Chief of the Order of Military Merit as well as the Gold Cross of the Order of Redeemer and the Mecidiye Order of the 4th class.

Steinsdorf was married to Clotilde Ernestine von Adelsheim (1823-1884). She was a canon in the women's monastery at St. Anna in Munich. The Bavarian major general Maximilian von Steinsdorf (1852-1919) and Oskar von Steinsdorf (* 1857) emerged from the marriage.
