Medeia is a Finnish metalcore and death metal band from Tampere , which was founded in 2002.

history

The band was founded in 2002 by singer Teemu Karjalainen, guitarist Samuli Peltola, keyboardist Laura Dziadulewicz, bassist Samuli Kuusinen and drummer Janne Putkisaari. The self-financed and self-produced debut album Quantum Holocaust: World Domination followed in summer 2006 . In late 2006, Karjalainen left the cast. In early 2007, Keijo Niinimaa was added as a new singer. In the summer of that year, the band started looking for a new label, which they found in early 2008 with Fullsteam Records . A self-titled EP was then released in May , followed by the ten-song second album Cult in September . Next it went on a European tour with The Ocean . Both groups played together with Burst and Bison BC in Karlsruhe . In 2009 the band could be seen at the Sauna Open Air and the Tuska Open Air Metal Festival . In May 2011 the third album Abandon All was released, which forms a trilogy with the first two albums. The following summer the band was represented at various festivals in Finland. In 2011, Medeia was once again part of the program at the Tuska Open Air Metal Festival. The band also performed with Ozzy Osbourne , As I Lay Dying , The Dillinger Escape Plan , Between the Buried and Me , Entombed , Animals as Leaders , Decapitated , Raised Fist and Terror . During a tour through Europe with Children of Bodom in October 2013, the fourth album Iconoclastic was released. The tour consisted of 49 concerts that took place in 25 countries. During this tour, the two bands also played together with Insomnium in Hamburg . To promote the album, an eleven-part Finland tour was carried out. In spring 2014 the singer Keijo Niinimaa left the group, whereupon he was replaced by Frans Aalto. This was followed by the release of the EP Manning the Helm .

style

In laut.de is stated that the band after the Greek mythical figure Medea named and that it plays metalcore. Dziadulewicz's keyboard has played a central role in the songs since the band was founded. Katharina Pfeifle from Rock Hard described the band in her review of the self-titled EP as a “ brutal death metaller ”. The publication is especially suitable for "noise fanatics". Two editions later, Volkmar Weber reviewed the album Cult and found that the band can withstand previous tour partners such as The Dillinger Escape Plan, Terror and As I Lay Dying. In the songs they work through “[b] rachial riffal volleys , fat grooves against fat in the neck and wildly angry shouting ” as well as “epic-dense synths”. The music is suitable for people who "feel attracted to destructive thunderstorms or for whom Machine Head are now too poppy ". Patrick Schmidt stated in his review of Iconoclastic that the band goes on tour with Children of Bodom, but musically has nothing in common with them. Rather, you play "dark, mechanical Extreme Metal with all kinds of samples and the most varied of influences". Here come staccato riffs, futuristic sounds and occasional female vocals are used. The basic atmosphere is somewhere between that of Meshuggah , Fear Factory and Strapping Young Lad . Due to various influences such as Black Metal , Gothic Metal and Industrial , an exact genre allocation is difficult. Marcel Rudoletzky from Metal Hammer also reviewed the album. Here he found that the band is continuing their trend of becoming "softer" and more accessible on this record. Melodic and medium-paced passages have now been added to hard and brutal riffs as well as “Frickelorgien”. As a result, the group sounds too intentionally modern in places. The album is suitable for fans of metalcore and melodic death metal . One issue later, Thomas Strater stated that since Iconoclastic the term Melodic Death Metal is no longer sufficient to describe the group's music, as the album is now more diverse. Samuli Peltola justified this in an interview with him with the fact that the band had previously worked on a topic-oriented basis and they now write individual songs.
