Location of Medical Lake in Spokane County |
Medical Lake is a city ( City ) in Spokane County in the State of Washington . As of the 2010 United States Census , Medical Lake had 5,060 residents. The city is the seat of a mental hospital, the Eastern State Hospital .
history
The town of Medical Lake was officially recognized in 1890. It takes its name from the nearby lake of the same name.
The Spokane , an Indian tribe , had populated the area for a long time and believed in the healing powers of the water and the mud from the lake. White settlers like Andrew Lefevre and Stanley Hallett who came to the area in the 1870s adopted this belief and marketed the salts extracted from the lake for medicinal purposes. The success of these collections sparked the development of a salt and soap industry, which was followed by the establishment of commercial bathhouses in the 1880s. With the construction of several lakefront hotels and the establishment of Eastern State Hospital in 1891, Medical Lake saw a period of economic growth that lasted into the 1920s when the lake's popularity waned. A period of stagnation was interrupted in the 1940s with the construction of nearby Fairchild Air Force Base , which suddenly caused the city's population to increase. Medical Lake's economy still relies on the presence of the clinic and Fairchild AFB, with the town also serving as a dormitory for nearby Spokane .
geography
According to the United States Census Bureau , the city has a total area of 9.43 km², of which 8.81 km² is land and the rest is water.
The city lies east of the lake of the same name. There are many other lakes within a few miles of town, including West Medical Lake , Silver Lake , Clear Lake, and numerous smaller lakes and pools south of town. The road distance from Downtown Spokane is 16 miles (26 km) via Interstate 90 and Washington State Route 902 , the latter through the city. The Eastern State Hospital is opposite on the western shore of the lake. The Fairchild Air Force Base is located just north of the city.
Geologically, the city is located on Columbia plateau basalts , which were severely eroded by the Missoula floods at the end of the last glacial period and made the city and its surroundings part of the Channeled Scablands .
