The "Heights" in the city name refer to the higher position of the city opposite the city center of Spokane. Controversy

Mayor Patrick Rushing was forced to resign in July 2015 after he named President Barack Obama as a “monkey man” and First Lady Michelle Obama a “gorilla” on his Facebook page . Rushing initially denied this and stated that he was not a racist. This followed an earlier incident in 2015 when Rushing left his job as a school bus driver after he was accused of hit and miss.

In August 2015, Rushing submitted his resignation. He stated: "I find it difficult to continue due to my declining health issues." (Eng. about: "I find it difficult to continue because of my declining health.") He was followed by the then deputy mayor Kevin Richey.
