occupation

My dream or The loneliness is never alone is a German experimental film and independent film by Roland Reber with elements from drama and comedy from 2008. Wolfgang Seidenberg and Mira Gittner played the main roles .

action

The nameless main character, the “man” flees from the eternal repetitions of his life, from the expectations of his social environment, from the imposed responsibility of his standardized life and from the constraints and situations that he himself has created. After a aimless journey in a taxi, he meets a woman on a disused factory site who calls herself "Godot" and who has made herself at home in an old mobile home. Godot spends her time floating on a “dream island”, a rubber boat with an inflatable palm tree, searching the city's sewers and garbage dumps for signs of human existence. The man explains himself to her.

Together with Godot, the "man" tries to fathom the rules of human existence in general and the coexistence of the sexes in particular. He tries to find the goal for his hitherto haphazard escape from himself and himself. In a joint hike through the night and discussion with Godot, the "man" turns his inside out and lets his life pass in review. The key figures in his life emerge: his wife, who only reproaches him, his complaining lover, his mother, who persecutes him with lamenting reproaches, his deceased father whose funeral he did not attend, his grandfather, who indulged in old German attitudes, and his dull father Friend who tells jokes and at first glance tends to be superficial.

The fantasy scenes appear as fragments from the format portfolio of the mass media, between which one zips back and forth: The friend “flies” through the virtual reality of a computer game. Silent films, commercials and educational television give guest performances. Little Red Riding Hood and the big bad wolf meet in a fairytale scene. Out of a garbage can, a fanatical, hysterical “geil, geil geil” nagging, repulsive Adolf Hitler sucks silly Jewish jokes. And in the fictional TV talk show Only Loneliness Counts , a grotesque and cynical talk show host appears to lead the characters through the show of life. The conflicts of the people leave the man only one way out - the profound and unreserved questioning and confrontation with himself and the serious search for meaning and orientation.

background

The shooting of the film took place in the early summer of 2007 and was completed in 24 days. The film was shot in Landsberg am Lech at original locations such as brownfield sites and sewer systems, Kaufbeuren , Augsburg and Munich . In contrast to the usual working method of the director, a script was used due to the tight time budget . It is based on a play by the director from the 1980s.

The film was produced without government funding and without funding from a private film fund , and had its international premiere on March 8, 2008 at the international film festival Fantasporto in Porto , Portugal . In October 2008 the film will take part in the Sitges Festival Internacional de Cinema de Catalunya in Sitges , Spain in the “New Visions” competition.

Reviews

"Constructed and bloodless."

- Stephanie Grimm in Tagesspiegel on March 13, 2008

"Reber films are psychoanalytical and socially critical art rioters, poetic and pretentious, playful and ironic, including the risk of embarrassment ... Undoubtedly, this incredible living cinema, at least the idea of these courageous and personal films, adds an amazing facet to German cinema."

“Unfortunately, the noble undertaking to provide an alternative to the flaccid sense of multimedia entertainment culture silts up in meaningful dialogues such as 'words are dead feelings'. One cites Beckett or Brecht ambitiously and parodies Hitler, but there is not a single movie picture. In this 'drama' the only thing that is not very funny and dramatic is the misunderstanding that filmed theater would result in a film. "

"Anything that sprouts outside of state-controlled film funding doesn't always have to be a rabid amateur splatter, but can also be a bizarre lucky bag."

"A creative excursion into the depths of the soul."
