Melissa McMorrow

Melissa McMorrow (born June 19, 1981 in Palo Alto ) is a former American boxer and world champion.

Life

She is of Brazilian descent and grew up in San José . She later lived in San Francisco . She played football in her youth and was an All-Americans in college . She played semi-professionally in both Brazil and the USA. With the dissolution of the Women's United Soccer Association , however, she ended her football career.

She started boxing in March 2005 and won the Northern California Golden Gloves Flyweight championchips in March 2006. On July 15th, 2006 she won the National Golden Gloves Flyweight championchip in Fort Lauderdale over Aileen Viera . At the end of 2006 she was already in third place in the US national ranking. In 2007 she was successful in the USA Junior Bantamweight championchips. At the USA Nationals in Colorado Springs in the Junior Flyweight division, she just lost in the final against Marlen Esparza , who she was also defeated in the 2008 final. She finished her career as an amateur boxer with a second place in the national ranking and switched to the professionals.

She played her first professional fight on June 25, 2008 against Mayela Perez in Beverly Hills and was active until 2018. The 1.56 meter tall McMorrow fought in flyweight . In total, she competed in 20 professional fights. On June 24, 2011, she won the New York State Flyweight title in Woodhaven against Eileen Olszewski , which she defended on July 30, 2011 in Brooklyn against Keisher McLeod-Wells . In 2012 she lost to Arely Muciño in the fight for the WBA Interim World Flyweight title in Guadalajara , Mexico .

On May 16, 2012, however, she succeeded in defeating Susianna Kentikian in the fight for the flyweight titles of WBA, WBO and WIBF in the Brandenburg-Halle in Frankfurt (Oder) in Germany . She defended the WBO title on October 10, 2012 against Yahaira Martinez in Kissimmee , Florida . On March 23, 2013 she defended the WBO and WIBF titles against Nadia Raoui in the GETEC Arena in Magdeburg . In 2014 she lost in a fight in Mexico against Mariana Juarez for the WBC International Junior bantamweight title. In 2015 she won the WBO flyweight title again against Kenya Enriquez in Mexico.

Apart from the boxing ring, McMorrow manages energy projects for the company SolarCity . At Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh she earned a degree in architecture . She is also involved in educational work for women and children.
