Menahem Eliahu Yaari ( Hebrew מנחם יערי; Born April 26, 1935 in Jerusalem ) is an Israeli economist .

Life

Yaari studied economics and philosophy in Jerusalem. In 1958 he received his BA , 1962 his doctorate from Stanford University . From 1962 to 1967 he was Assistant Professor and Associate Professor at Yale University and a member of the Cowles Foundation for Research in Economics. In 1967 he returned to Jerusalem, where he taught economics and philosophy of science at the Hebrew University until 1970 as Senior Lecturer and Associate Professor . From 1968 to 1975 he was co-editor of the magazine Econometrica , since 1969 he has been a member of the Econometric Society .

In 1971 Yaari received the SA Schonbrunn professorship for mathematical economics. In the same year he became chairman of the Department of Economics (until 1973). From 1985 to 1992 he was director of the Institute for Advanced Studies. In 1989/90 he was an Overseas Fellow at Cambridge University . The Ben Gurion University of the Negev awarded Yaari an honorary doctorate in 1989 . From 1992 to 1997 he was President of the Open University of Israel . In 1994 he was a member of the four-member state commission investigating the Hebron massacre committed by the national religious terrorist Baruch Goldstein . From 1994 to 1995 he was Vice President of the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities , of which he has been a member since 1991. In October 1998, Yaari retired . In 1999 he was chairman of the Jerusalem Music Center Executive Committee. From 2000 to 2001 Yaari was a member of the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton University .

In 2004, now chairman of the Israel Academy of Sciences, he and Sari Nusseibeh founded the Israeli-Palestinian Science Organization (IPSO) - a non-governmental organization to promote scientific cooperation between Israelis and Palestinians. Yaari is a member of the board of directors of the Molad Center for the Renewal of Israeli Democracy . In 2011, as one of 27 winners of the Israel Prize, he belonged to a group of several dozen prominent Israeli intellectuals who, in a joint appeal, called for the complete withdrawal of Israel from the territories occupied since 1967 and the recognition of a Palestinian state to be established there, as well as one to the States of the European Union directed call for recognition of the State of Palestine . In 2016 he signed an appeal by around 500 Israeli intellectuals to the Jews of the Diaspora to work together with Israeli partners to “save Israel” for an end to the occupation and a “new future”.

Yaari has held numerous visiting professorships, including Berkeley, Pennsylvania, London School of Economics, Cambridge University and the University of London.
