Merope is the proper name of the star 23 Tauri in the Pleiades . The star is named after Merope , the daughter of Atlas in Greek mythology . Like all stars in the Pleiades, Merope is occasionally covered by the moon .

It has an apparent magnitude of +4.2 mag, belongs to the spectral class B6 IVe and is about 360 light years away from Earth. According to measurements from the Gaia mission , the star is only 340 ± 15 light years away. That would make him one of the closest stars in the Pleiades.
