The merrilliopanax is a genus within the family of the Araliaceae (Araliaceae). The only three species are common in the Himalayan region and the highlands of Tibet .

description

Appearance and leaves

Merrilliopanax species grow as evergreen shrubs or small trees . The trunk and branches have no spines . The tribe owns one mark.

The alternate leaves are large and divided into a petiole and a leaf blade. The simple leaf blades can be two- or three-lobed or unlobed ( Merrilliopanax listeri ) (this is where it differs from the closest related genera). The leaf margins are smooth to serrate or serrated. The two inconspicuous to barely recognizable stipules are fused with the petiole.

Inflorescences and flowers

The terminal or lateral on an inflorescence stem, branched, paniculate total inflorescences are composed of doldigen partial inflorescences and contain many flowers.

The probably hermaphrodite flowers are radial symmetry and five-fold with a double flower envelope . The five sepals form a wreath with five tiny calyx teeth. There are five petals . There is only one circle with five stamens . Two carpels have become an under constant ovary grown. The two styluses are completely free or fused at their base.

Fruits and seeds

The ellipsoid drupes contain two seeds. The seeds have endosperm .

Systematics and distribution

The genus Merrilliopanax was established in 1942 by Hui Lin Li in The Araliaceae of China , in Sargentia - A continuation of the contributions from the Arnold arboretum of Harvard University , Volume 2, pages 62-63. Type species is Merrilliopanax listeri (King) HLLi . The genus name Merrilliopanax honors the American botanist Elmer Drew Merrill (1876–1956).

The Merrilliopanax species occur in northeastern India , Bhutan , Nepal , Myanmar and with all three species in western China .

The genus Merrilliopanax belongs to the subfamily Aralioideae within the family Araliaceae .

There are only three types of Merrilliopanax :

  • Tibetan tetrapanax ( merrilliopanax alpinus (CBClarke) CBShang , Syn .: Brassaiopsis alpina C.B.Clarke , merrilliopanax tibetanus C.Y.Wu & SKWu , Pseudobrassaiopsis alpina (CBClarke) RNBanerjee , Tetrapanax tibetanus G.Hoo , merrilliopanax cordifolius Sastry ): The range extends from northeastern India over Bhutan and Nepal to southern Tibet .
  • Merrilliopanax listeri (King) HLLi (Syn .: Dendropanax listeri King , Gilibertia listeri (King) Hand.-Mazz. , Merrilliopanax chinensis H.L.Li ): The distribution area extends from northeast India through northern Myanmar to northeast Yunnan .
  • Merrilliopanax membranifolius (WWSm.) CBShang (Syn .: Nothopanax membranifolius W.W.Sm. , Gilibertia membranifolia (WWSm.>) Hand.-Mazz. , Gilibertia myriantha Hand.-Mazz. ): The distribution area extends from north-eastern India over northern Myanmar to to northwest and western Yunnan.

use

The Tibetan rice paper tree ( Merrilliopanax alpinus , Chinese: 西藏 常春 木 xi zang chang chun mu) and Merrilliopanax listeri , Chinese: 常春 木 chang chun mu, are used as medicinal plants in traditional Chinese medicine. Both species are also used as an ornamental plant in tropical to subtropical parks and gardens . The pulp of the trunk of the Tibetan rice paper tree is cut into pieces and processed into paper, called " rice paper ".
