operator NOTE

Metropolitana di Napoli is the name of the metro in the Italian city of Naples .

The subway network consists of two lines, which are designated as lines 1 and 6 according to the urban and later according to the regional transport plan. In order to increase the attractiveness of the subway, some train stations were provided with modern works of art or designed as works of art by internationally famous artists and architects. Line 6 is currently out of service.

network

line 1

The construction work on Line 1 (then known as Metropolitana collinare , for example, Hügel-U-Bahn ) began in 1986. The first section (3.8 km between Vanvitelli and Colli Aminei ) went into operation on March 28, 1993.

In July 1995 the line from Colli Aminei to Piscinola was extended.

The Vanvitelli - Museo route followed in April 2001. The Museo station was connected to the Cavour station on line 2 by a pedestrian tunnel .

On March 27, 2002 it was extended to Dante station in the city center. In addition, the Materdei intermediate station was inaugurated in July 2003 .

On March 26, 2011, the section from Dante to Università was put into operation. From then until the opening of the extension to Garibaldi station, it was operated by shuttle service. On September 17, 2012, the Toledo intermediate station was put into operation on this section.

The expected date of the opening of the extension has been postponed several times. Instead of 2009, the extension from Università to Garibaldi with the transition to Naples Central Station of the Italian State Railways was officially opened on December 2, 2013. The scheduled operation on this section finally began on December 31, 2013. With the commissioning of this extension, the Dante – Università section can be operated on two tracks. With the opening of this section, however, the intermediate stations Municipio (town hall) and Duomo were not yet served. On June 2, 2015, the Municipio train station was opened in the area of the port , where there will be a possibility to change to the extended line 6 in the future. The Duomo train station is expected to open provisionally in November 2019 so that EU funds are not lost.

The Piscinola – Di Vittorio section is under construction, as is the extension from Garibaldi towards Naples Airport .

Section Piscinola – Capodichino Di Vittorio

Construction of the Piscinola – Capodichino Di Vittorio section began. The section was originally supposed to be completed in 2014, but construction stopped in 2009 due to a lack of funds. The section is to be used not only by the trains of the underground line 1, but also by those of the Linea Arcobaleno. The latter is an EAV-operated metro line that runs north from Piscinola to Aversa .

An extension to Capodichino Aeroporto near Naples Airport is planned. This means that in the future, the underground trains will be able to connect to the city center, while the Arcobaleno line will go to Aversa.

After the Campania region contributed to the construction costs of the route through the EAV, construction work resumed in April 2017. The Piscinola – Secondigliano section is to be completed in spring 2019, the rest of the section by Di Vittorio 2020.

Garibaldi – Capodichino Aeroporto section

The underground construction for this section has been completed up to Poggioreale, the construction of the other tunnels up to Capodichino Aeroporto , where the airport is located, was tendered in 2018. The Centro direzionale station has been under construction since 2014 and should be completed in 2019, with the remaining stations scheduled to follow by 2022.

Artistic arrangement

Line 1 is also known as the Metrò dell'Arte (Art Metro). The train stations Dante, Museo, Materdei, Salvator Rosa, Quattrogiornate and Rione Alto were designed by internationally renowned artists and thus form a kilometer-long, freely accessible gallery of modern art.

Line 6

Line 6

The route of this line 6 runs in an east-west direction from Fuorigrotta to Napoli Mergellina station . It was planned as a light rail with street sections for the soccer World Cup in 1990 , but only a short underground section was created, which was never put into operation due to lack of money.

After several years, the section was completed as a subway and opened in 2007. The character of a light rail was retained, however, because the trains used are only 25 m long. They were serviced in a makeshift underground workshop near Mostra. For major maintenance work, the cover over the workshop had to be removed and the trains lifted out of the workshop.

In 2011, operations on the isolated line, which was hardly of any importance for city traffic, were stopped again. The trains only ran every 16 minutes from Monday to Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

An expansion into the city center to the Municipio junction , where there is a transition to line 1, is under construction. Unlike previously planned, this section of the route will run entirely in the tunnel. The construction work kept coming to a standstill. In March 2013, for example, part of the Palazzo Guevara di Bovino collapsed, which prompted the public prosecutor's office to investigate the actions of the general contractor Ansaldo STS during the construction work more closely. In 2014, three ships from the Roman Empire were discovered during the construction of the connecting tunnel between the Municipio train station and the depot in Via Acton, which led to the construction work being interrupted. The Mostra – San Pasquale section is scheduled to go back into operation in January 2019, and the extension to Municipio in March 2020.

In the medium term, the 25 m trains are to be replaced by 39 m long trains that can hold 300 people. A workshop is planned for the new trains on the site of the former military arsenal on Via Campegna, which is connected to the line by a tunnel under the FS station Napoli Campi Flegrei .
