Michał Serwacy Wiśniowiecki ( Lithuanian Mykolas Vyšnioveckis ; born May 13, 1680 in Lwów , today's Ukraine ; † September 18, 1744 Merkinė , Lithuania ) was a Grand Hetman from Lithuania in the 18th century. He was also Grand Chancellor of Lithuania from 1720. He came from the high nobility Wiśniowiecki .

family

Michał Serwacy Wiśniowiecki was born on May 13, 1680 in Lwów. His father was Konstanty Krzysztof Wiśniowiecki , the voivode of the Bełz Voivodeship . His mother was Anna Chodorowska.

He was married three times in total. He married his first wife Katarzyna Dolska on May 10, 1696. With her he had two daughters, Anna and Katarzyna Wiśniowiecka. She died on January 26, 1726 in Lubieszów . On July 29, 1725 he married Maria Magdalena Czartoryska . She died in Opole on December 4, 1728 . Two years later he married Tekla Róża Radziwiłł . She was the widow of Jacob Heinrich Reichsgraf von Flemming . The wedding was on February 21, 1730.

He died on September 18, 1744 in Merkinė. His funeral in Wiśnicz was one of the most generous in Poland in the 18th century.

Military career

During the civil war in Lithuania in 1700 Wiśniowiecki was the leader of the opposition to the Sapieha party . In the Battle of Olkieniki on November 18, 1700, he defeated the Sapiehan troops as commander in chief . In 1702 he was appointed field hetman of Lithuania . A year later he is the spokesman for the extraordinary Sejm in Lublin from June 11th to August 19th. As a result, he was appointed Grand Hetman. At times he also holds the rank of court marshal . In 1703 he was appointed Castellan of Vilna and Grand Hetman of Lithuania . Furthermore, he becomes the star of Pinsk , Waukawysk , Hlynjany , Tuchola , Wilkisk , Wilkowsk , Metel and Merkinė. 1704 Participation as field marshal and commander of the Russian troops in the battle of Jakobstadt on July 26, 1704.

In 1707 Wiśniowiecki changed political sides and subsequently supported the anti-king Stanislaus I. Leszczyński . In the same year he was captured by the Russians. From 1709 he lived in exile .

After the peace treaty in 1716 he returned to his homeland.

In 1720 he was appointed Grand Chancellor of Lithuania.

In 1733 he supported the Russian intervention and the election of August III.

From 1735 he was also appointed voivode of Vilna.

In 1719 he was awarded the Order of the White Eagle .
