action

The 35-year-old insurance employee Michael lives secluded in a house and mainly goes about his work. After work, he deals with the ten-year-old boy Wolfgang, whom he is imprisoned in a room in the basement of his house. Michael, who has a rough deal with Wolfgang, but attaches importance to a neat appearance, is not particularly interested in Wolfgang, except to imitate classic family situations or maintain sexual contacts.

One day Michael tries to kidnap another boy from a kart track. However, he does not succeed in doing this.

When Michael opens the door to the basement again, Wolfgang pours boiling water from a kettle into his face and tries to escape. However, Michael can prevent him from escaping. He drives off in his car (he probably wants to go to the hospital because of his burns), gets off the road and has a fatal accident.

The film ends with Michael's relatives breaking up the household some time after his death and opening the door to the basement room in which Wolfgang was kept hidden.

criticism

At the Austrian theatrical release of the film, Die Presse praised Schleinzer's production, in which the debut director proves himself to be an “intelligent dialectician” : “We know that the lie will be exposed, that the fortress will fall. The willingness to accompany Michael to the end is the greatest achievement of this film. ” In an earlier review of the premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, the Austrian daily also highlighted the achievements of the two actors Michael Fuith and David Rauchberger . The clear and strictly composed images would be reminiscent of those of Michael Haneke. The film's theme polarized international criticism. A “concentrated, clever, well-considered and controversial film” with some dramaturgical weaknesses, judged Spiegel Online and counted Michael among the highlights of the competition for the Palme d'Or so far . However, the film did not receive a prize in the Cannes competition.
