Ambrose Griffiths

Ambrose Griffiths OSB (born December 4, 1928 in Twickenham , † June 14, 2011 in Liverpool ; real name is Michael Griffiths ) was an English clergyman and Roman Catholic bishop of Hexham and Newcastle .

Life

Michael Griffiths attended a preparatory school in Brighton and later the Ampleforth Preparatory School in Gilling Castle in North Yorkshire . He then visited the Ampleforth College and studied from 1946 natural sciences, with an emphasis on chemistry, at Balliol College of Oxford University . Here he received a First Class Bachelor of Science Honors Degree , and later a Master of Arts .

After completing his studies, Griffiths joined the Benedictine order , made his profession on September 25, 1951 in Ampleforth Abbey and took the name of the order Ambrose, based on Ambrosius of Milan . Griffiths now visited the Papal Athenaeum Sant'Anselmo in Rome to study theology and prepare for ordination . He received the same on July 21, 1957.

For the next few years he taught at Ampleforth College . In 1972 he became the procurator of Ampleforth Abbey and was thus responsible for the administration of its assets. Four years later, on April 7, 1976, Griffiths was elected Abbot of Ampleforth to succeed Basil Hume . After his eight-year term as abbot, he served as pastor of St. Mary in Leyland for an additional eight years. Upon leaving the office of Abbot of Ampleforth, he was given the title of Abbot of Westminster.

Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Hexham and Newcastle on January 11, 1992 . The Archbishop of Liverpool , Derek John Worlock , ordained him bishop on March 20 of that year ; Co- consecrators were Hugh Lindsay , Bishop Emeritus of Hexham and Newcastle, and Owen Francis Swindlehurst , Auxiliary Bishop in Hexham and Newcastle.

On March 26, 2004, Pope John Paul II accepted his age-related resignation. Griffiths now settled in the Parish of St. Mary's in Leyland, Lancashire, which he had previously looked after as pastor. He died on June 14, 2011 of complications from leukemia .
