Michael Innes
Michael Innes (actually John Innes Mackintosh Stewart ; * the thirtieth September 1906 in Scotland Edinburgh , † 12. November 1994 in Coulsdon in English Surrey ) was a Scottish crime writer . He also held a professorship for English and literary studies.
Life
Stewart was initially a student at the Edinburgh Academy and then studied English literature at Oriel College , Oxford . In 1929 he studied psychoanalysis in Vienna . From 1930 to 1935 he taught English literature at Leeds University. In 1932 he married Margaret Hardwick, a medic. Innes wrote his first novel in 1936 during a long sea voyage to Australia , where he had taken on a professorship at the University of Adelaide . From 1946 to 1948 he taught at Queen's University Belfast Belfast and then moved to Christ Church College Oxford.
The main character of his detective stories is Detective Inspector John Appleby , who in Innes' first novel Too much light in the dark has to deal with the dark side of university operations. The main setting for many of his novels is Oxford and the surrounding area.
Innes wrote about as many novels over the course of 50 years. A selection of these has appeared in the DuMonts Kriminal-Bibliothek series.
