Michael Pappert (born  August 15, 1957 in Hamburg ) is a former German national basketball player. He was the captain of the German national team for a long time, including at the 1984 Summer Olympics .

Career

Michael Pappert was discovered in his Aachen high school for basketball. He played for the DJK Frankenberg until he graduated from high school , then he moved to the basketball league for SSV Hagen , the Hagener finished fourth in the table at the end of this season. He then played for two years in the United States at the University of Redlands. During this time he improved the Redlands University team's record in blocked throws. His record lasted for 20 years.

After returning from the USA in 1979, he studied sport at the German Sport University in Cologne . 1981 and 1982 won Pappert with the BSC Saturn Cologne , the German Basketball Championship . In 1980, 1981 and 1983 he won the DBB Cup competition . 1985 Pappert moved to TuS 04 Bayer Leverkusen . In its first season, Leverkusen won the cup and championship double. Another cup victory followed in 1987. In 1989 Pappert ended his Bundesliga career after Leverkusen had lost in both the championship finals and the cup finals against Steiner Bayreuth . Later, Pappert was once again active for a short time at the Oldenburg TB in the second division , for which he also worked as a coach. As such, he was released in November 1994.

After his basketball career, Pappert became a teacher and also played for senior teams of the Oldenburg TB.

National team

From 1977 Pappert played in the national team and completed a total of 169  international matches . The high point of his international career was his participation as team captain in the 1984 Olympic Games . Pappert took part in eight games, scored 58 points and finished eighth with the German team. In addition, Pappert took part in the FIBA European Championship finals three times : in 1981 he was tenth with the national team, eighth in 1983 and sixth in 1987 . In 1988 Pappert said goodbye to the DBB national team at a tournament in Brazil .

In 2014 he became European champion with the German over 55 national team.

Style of play

Michael Pappert was in his time, for a period of more than ten years, one of the most important and popular player personalities of the DBB. He convinced, also on a European level , especially with his dynamism, his jumping ability and his success rate when attacking the basket.
