Michael Wolff (born September 19, 1954 in New Orleans , Louisiana ) is an American musician , composer and actor .

Life

Private life

Wolff was born in New Orleans , Louisiana and later grew up in Memphis , Tennessee and San Francisco , California . He began learning classical piano at the age of eight and later studied at the Universities of California in Los Angeles and Berkeley .

Wolff is married to the actress , producer , screenwriter and director Polly Draper . He lives with her and his two sons Nat and Alex Wolff in Manhattan , New York . Michael Wolff suffered from Tourette's syndrome in his youth . He is on the board of directors of the Tourette Syndrome Association . He is also involved in caring for children with Tourette's syndrome.

Career

Wolff initially led a quintet with Alex Foster . He dropped out of college to begin his music career in Cal Tjader's Band . In 1975 he joined the Cannonball Adderley Band . Wolff has worked with many famous musicians, including Warren Zevon , the Thad Jones / Mel Lewis Orchestra , Sonny Rollins , Wayne Shorter , Tony Williams and Christian McBride .

Wolff became music director of the singer Nancy Williams. Arsenio Hall , who supported Williams, selected Michael Wolff Bandleader for his talk show "The Arsenio Hall Show" . There he met his wife at her performance.

Wolff is the band leader of the jazz band, "Michael Wolff and Impure Thoughts" . With occasional special contributions by tabla player Badal Roy , drummer Mike Clark and electric bass player John B. Williams. He wrote the music for the films "Who's The Man" and "Made Up" .

The film The Tic Code , written by Polly Draper, is very loosely based on Wolff's life. It's about a jazz saxophone player who reconciles a young pianist who is suffering from Tourette with his illness. Wolff contributed the music and made a brief appearance as a sound engineer in the film. Michael Wolff can be seen in the TV series and films of the Naked Brothers Band at the side of his sons Nat and Alex. There he plays their eccentric father Sonny Wolff . He is executive producer and music supervisor of the series alongside his wife, who writes, produces and directs the script.
