Michiel de Ruyter (radio presenter)
Michiel de Ruyter (born August 3, 1926 in Haarlem ; † October 15, 1994 ) was a Dutch jazz musician, radio presenter and music producer .
Live and act
De Ruyter was active as an amateur jazz musician and composer in his early years from 1945 to 1952. He played clarinet, alto and soprano saxophone in the formations De Mokum Washboard Stompers in 1946, in the quartet The Blues Players and in 1947 in the sextet Rhythm Dynamics . In 1948/49 he was a member of the Orchestra of the Amsterdam Jazz Society and The Mokum Jazzmen , as well as the Chiel de Ruyter's Jazzmen . With the Mokum Washboard Stompers he recorded for the label AJS ( Amsterdamse Jazz Sociëteit ), whose secretary was Ruyter. In March 1952 he began to work as a radio presenter for the radio station Algemene Vereniging Radio Omroep , from 1958 for the station VARA , where he had a weekly record program that lasted until 1972. As a presenter, he interviewed musicians such as Stan Kenton and John Coltrane . He then worked for the NOS jazz program , which he was in charge of until three months before his death in 1994.
He also produced recording sessions for the Tony Vos Quartet, the Wessel Ilcken Combo, the Rob Madna Trio and the Stido Alstrøm Trio (1955), as part of the Jazz Behind the Dikes series . a. by Frans Elsen , Piet Noordijk , Toon van Vliet and Ruud Brink (1956/57), also by Big Bill Broonzy , Eric Dolphy ( Last Date ) with the Misha Mengelberg trio (1964), Albert Ayler , Boy Edgar , Misha Mengelberg ( 1966) and the big band Contraband . For the station NOS Michiel de Ruyter put together from October 1979 the series Geschiedenis van de Jazz ( History of Jazz ), which ended after 695 episodes with De Ruyter's death.
