The Middelaldercentret Nykøbing (German: Mittelalterzentrum Nykøbing ) is an open-air museum on the banks of Guldborgsund near Sundby on the Danish island of Lolland , about 4 km northwest of the town of Nykøbing Falster . The museum deals with the late medieval history of Denmark shortly after the turn of the 15th century . The special focus is on the practical representation of everyday culture using historical actors. The director of the museum is the historian Peter Vemming Hansen, and Thit Birk Petersen has been the curator since 2016.

Furnishing

The museum has numerous faithfully reproduced buildings that represent large parts of a typical Danish market town . These include a hostel , various workshops (among others: weaving , blacksmiths , Plattner , Bag makers , Tailoring ) farmhouses with outbuildings and Market Square. At a small harbor there is a large merchant's house with an adjacent kitchen house , as well as the houses of a shopkeeper , dye works , shoemaker , as well as boat houses and several ships and boats. There is a Reepschlägerei and the construction site of a church spread over the area . In addition, the museum has a wide variety of weapons from this period, such as two blids , cannons and handguns. A tournament track is available for rider and jousting demonstrations . All buildings are designed and furnished true to the original, modern objects are not in the visible area.

Information paths are laid out in a forest away from the local assembly. A path provides information about the local legends of the Middle Ages. Another path, the Technology Park, shows inventions and technologies that have been recreated in original size at several stations , for example from Konrad Kyeser's Bellifortis , which visitors can try out. Many of them were copied here for the first time and until then only existed as sketches in old manuscripts. Some will never have worked in reality, like a perpetual motion machine or the first car in the world, which was built according to a drawing by the Italian engineer Johannes de Fontana .

In 2014, a war chariot armed with cannons was completed based on an illustration from Wolfegg Castle's house book and represents what may be the first tank in history.

The modern entrance building houses offices, a museum shop and the restaurant Den gyldne svane (German: The Golden Swan ) in a medieval setting. The technical area of the museum has workshops for all work.

Out of sight of the Medieval Museum is the fantasy world Griffenholm , with a Harry Potter or steampunk- like ambience with an escape room . In the guided groups in an unconventional environment Danish history, medieval legends and religion are brought closer.

The time of the museum follows the current calendar, but is set back by 610 years, for example in 2014 the year 1404 was shown and 2015 was correspondingly shown in 1405. During visitor hours, the buildings are animated by staff and volunteers dressed in period clothing and equipment, demonstrating all aspects of historical everyday life such as agriculture, trade, crafts, law, play and combat. The employees are both permanently employed and unemployed, who receive professional training here from the community in the modern workshops in the technical area of the museum. In addition, a large group of volunteers from Living History and Reenactment supports them who take part in the daily work and public activities. According to the Anglo-Saxon concept of the first person interpretation , all those involved should “live in the Middle Ages” towards the visitors, which means that they should not approach the visitors as modern people in historical costumes, but as people from this time. This communication concept was introduced by the museum's first director, the historian Kåre Johannessen.

history

The museum was founded after the reconstruction of a blide (trebuchet), a large medieval siege weapon, which was built on the occasion of the 700th anniversary of Nykøbing Falster in 1989. The local museum reconstructed the Blide and carried out experiments with it for three weeks, which were viewed by tens of thousands of people on site. In view of the great interest, the framework project "Medieval Technology Center" was carried out for two months in the summer of 1991. The project consisted of a number of workshops and a kitchen tent set up close to the picture. The Medieval Center was founded as a private institution in 1992. Two years later, in 1994, a donation from Arbejdsmarkedets Feriefond (a non-profit foundation) enabled the construction of an entire settlement with houses, a tournament track, the harbor and the entrance building. Since then, more houses have been built and major projects are carried out every year.

In 2019, the Griffenholm theme area was put into operation in order to attract new groups of visitors who had previously not been directly addressed with the topic of the Middle Ages.

research

The Medieval Center carries out extensive research on normal museum activities. These are based on original objects, historical sources and findings from academic research that are reconstructed, tested in practice and evaluated within the framework of experimental archeology . These results are published in a series of publications.

Of particular importance are the work of the HO Medieval Gunpowder Research Group (Medieval Gunpowder Research Group), which practically researched all aspects of the medieval production and use of black powder and the procurement of the necessary raw materials such as charcoal , saltpeter and sulfur, and here numerous experiments with reconstructed firearms and carried out incendiary weapons .

meaning

Due to the authenticity of the replicas, the museum is used as the backdrop for many Danish and international films and TV series such as 12 Meters Without a Head , the Danish film Vølvens Forbandelse , or documentaries by National Geographic , the TV channel History or the series Ursprung der Technik .
