Michael "Mike" Glen Block (born May 25, 1982 ) is an American cellist .

Life

Block studied at the Juilliard School of Music and the Cleveland Institute of Music . His cello teachers were Richard Aaron , Joel Krosnick , Darrett Adkins and Carter Enyeart . During his studies at the Juilliard School, he became a member of Yo-Yo Mas Silk Road Project . Since 2006 he has also been a member of Mark O'Connor's Appalachia Waltz Trio .

He has worked with ensembles such as Darol Angers Republic of Strings , The Knights , The Absolute Ensemble , the Sirius String Quartet and Bassam Sabas New York Arabic Orchestra and with musicians such as Edgar Meyer , Mike Marshall , Zakir Hussain , Marcel Khalifé , Goran Bregović , Michael Doucet , Kayhan Kalhor , Bruce Molsky , Simone Dinnerstein , Dawn Upshaw , Jan Vogler , Lenny Kravitz and Joe Zawinul together.

For his own Mike Block Band , a group that combines elements of jazz, rock and classical music, Block is active as a cellist, singer and composer. His compositions have also been performed at the Bremen MusikFest , the Tribeca New Music Festival and the MATA Festival . Block also performs with the Triboro Trio , which plays modern arrangements of traditional folk music, and forms a duo with Chinese pipa player Yan Wei .

In 2008 Block played the world premiere of Gregor Huebner's Cello Concerto and recorded it on CD. He taught as a guest lecturer a. a. at Stanford University , Stanford University and Princeton University , participated in summer camps and has been the director of the Vero Beach Summer Strings Camp since 2010 .
