Mikkel Boe Følsgaard (born May 1, 1984 ) is a Danish actor.

Life

Mikkel Boe Følsgaard is originally from Gilleleje , in the north of Zealand, and grew up on the island of Bornholm . He was introduced to acting through his grandfather, who took him to a casting on Danish television as a child. Then Følsgaard appeared in 1997 in an episode of the television series Bryggeren . At school he was a member of the theater company and acted in Shakespeare plays. He graduated from the Gribskov High School in Helsinge in 2003 , where he studied mathematics.

From 2008 to 2012 Følsgaard studied acting at the State Theater School ( Statens Teaterskole ) in Copenhagen . During his training in 2010 he played in plays at the Nørrebro Playhouse ( Mænd der hader kvinder ) and at the Grønnegårds Theater ( Melampe ). He was also cast in 2011 for an episode of the Danish-German crime series Northern Lights - Murderers Without Regret and worked as a voice actor or speaker for radio plays.

His international success as an actor began with Følsgaard's film debut: in 2012 he played the role of the insane Danish King Christian VII in Nikolaj Arcel's historical drama The Queen and the Personal Physician , which is about the relationship between Johann Friedrich Struensee (played by Mads Mikkelsen ) and Queen Caroline Mathilde ( Alicia Vikander ) acts. The cinema production premiered in the same year as part of the competition at the 62nd Berlin Film Festival, where Følsgaard was awarded the Silver Bear for best actor at the film festival. The competition jury headed by British director Mike Leigh had given the 27-year-old preference over well-known actors such as the American Robert Duvall ( Jayne Mansfield's Car ). “Back then my life changed from one minute to the next. I was an ordinary drama student who was just happy to be in a Danish film and suddenly I won one of the most important prizes in Europe, ”said Følsgaard. He was the first Danish actor who could triumph in Berlin. A year later, Følsgaard won important film awards for his portrayal of Denmark with Bodil and Robert , while The Queen and the Personal Physician was nominated for the Oscar for best foreign language film .

After the supporting role of the handicapped Uffe in Mikkel Nørgaard's thriller Mercy (2013) alongside Nikolaj Lie Kaas and Fares Fares , Følsgaard brought his participation in the Danish television series The Inheritance (2014-2017) two more Robert Prizes. As Emil Grønnegaard he was seen at the side of Trine Dyrholm , Jesper Christensen , Carsten Bjørnlund and Lene Maria Christensen and in retrospect called the acceptance of the role "probably the best decision of his career". Følsgaard developed into one of the most sought-after Danish actors and was also nominated for Denmark's most important film awards for the following film projects. He played a merciless Danish captain in the Oscar-nominated war drama Unter dem Sand - The Promise of Freedom , while he can be seen as midfielder Kim Vilfort in Kasper Barfoed's comedy Sommer '92 about the surprising victory of the Danish national soccer team at the 1992 European Championship . This was followed by Lisa Ohlin's love drama De steadhaftige (2016) in which he plays an injured soldier who has returned from Afghanistan . The title role in Mikkel Serups biopic Den bedste mand (2017) described Følsgaard than hitherto strenuous task. For the part of the Danish boxer Jørgen Hansen he had to train for six months, learn an accent and pay attention to his diet. Følsgaard canceled the following film offers for Hollywood productions for family reasons. From 2018 to 2020 he played a leading role in the first Danish Netflix series The Rain .

Mikkel Boe Følsgaard has two children.
