Previous model R55 - R59

The third generation of the British small car Mini within the BMW Group , internal designation F55 , F56 and F57 , was presented at the LA Auto Show in November 2013 . Like its predecessor, the new model is manufactured in Oxford and has also been manufactured by VDL NedCar in Born since July 2014 . A facelift followed in January 2018.

Innovations and technical details

The aerodynamic drag coefficient (c w ) of the body has been reduced to 0.28 and 0.31 for the MINI Cooper S, among other things, thanks to a smooth floor. their frontal area is 2.07 m². The grille and taillights have been enlarged. The daytime running lights have been changed . With the LED headlights that were previously available for an extra charge, it now forms a 4/5 ring around the low beam . This equipment also includes taillights with LED elements.

In the EuroNCAP crash test , the three-door model achieved four out of five stars in 2014 (and in the following years).

The engines all come from the new BMW engine kit and meet the EU6 emissions standard . The kit also contains gasoline and diesel engines with three cylinders , see the tables in the technical data. At the front, the car has a "single-joint strut axle", which means that the wheels are individually suspended from MacPherson struts and wishbones. The wishbone at the bottom of the "single-joint axle" is not split into two individual handlebars as in the more expensive models. The pivot bearing is made of aluminum, wishbones and subframe are made of high-strength steel; the rear axle is a space-saving multi - link construction in lightweight construction . A damping control "Dynamic Damper Control" is available for all models at an additional cost.

BMW replaced the central speedometer in the dashboard with a new multimedia system with integrated Ambilight ; its color depends on the current vehicle or operating situation, for example green when the start-stop system is active , orange when the radio volume is increased.

A five-door version with the internal designation F55 has been available since October 2014 .
The relatively unsuccessful models Coupé and Roadster were withdrawn from the market in 2015 without replacement, the new Mini Cabrio F57 came onto the market in March 2016. For the latter, a Union Jack is offered as an optional extra ("Mini Yours") as a structure over the entire horizontal roof surface.

Facelift

The Mini will be offered in a revised version in 2018. Among other things, this applies to efficiency and torque in the three-cylinder engines due to increased injection pressure. Carbon fiber reinforced plastic is now used to cover them, which saves weight and enables the use of waste material from the production of the i-models. A 7-speed dual clutch transmission is available for an extra charge . In March 2018, the diesel variants were revised in order to reduce harmful emissions; since July 2018, all minis with a gasoline engine have had a gasoline particle filter (OPF) .

The LED light , which is still subject to a surcharge and is also available in matrix technology, now has completely closed LED rings (front), and LED elements in the rear lights in the shape of one half of the Union Jack . The latter is also available backlit in the dashboard.

In June 2019, the diesel versions of these Mini will no longer be available after the sales share that had fallen in 2018 (maximum 13% for the 5-door).

From spring 2020 the Mini Electric will be delivered with 135 kW / 184 PS. Like the Mini Electric Concept study presented in 2017, it uses the technology of the BMW i3 for the battery and motor . The battery is installed in a T-shape in the vehicle floor.

At the LA Auto Show in November 2019, Mini presented the three-door John Cooper Works GP, limited to 3000 copies .

Mini John Cooper Works GP Concept

At the International Motor Show in September 2017 Frankfurt was a concept car Mini John Cooper Works GP Concept presented based on the F56. The production vehicle is to succeed the John Cooper Works GP from 2013. The concept vehicle has the number 0059 on the flanks. This is a reminiscence of the first year of production of the original Mini. The taillights are reminiscent of the Union Jack.

Mini Electric Concept

Also at the IAA 2017, Mini presented an electrically powered concept vehicle based on the F56 and powered by the BMW i3 . The series version Mini Electric was presented in July 2019 and will be available from 2020. The taillights of this concept vehicle are also reminiscent of the Union Jack. The vehicles at the IAA 2019 have the usual Union Jack taillights.
