Minions - In Search of the Mini Boss (Original: Minions: The Rise of Gru ) or Minions 2 for short is a planned 3D animation film by Illumination Entertainment and Universal Pictures and the successor to Minions (2015). The film is scheduled to hit German cinemas on July 1, 2021 and the US cinemas the following day.

The film is set in the 1970s : twelve-year-old Felonius Gru grows up in the United States . As a fanboy for a group of supervillains known as the Vicious 6 , Gru forges a plan to get bad enough to join them. When the Vicious 6 fire their leader, legendary fighter Wild Knuckles, Gru applies to become their newest member, but is turned down. When Gru and the Minions steal a stone from them, Gru suddenly finds himself a mortal enemy of all evil. While on the run, Gru receives unexpected help from Wild Knuckles personally, and realizes that bad guys sometimes need a little help from their friends too.

On January 25, 2017, Illumination and Universal Pictures publicly announced a sequel to 'Minions'. Production started on July 19, 2017 with Brad Ableson as co-director. The English title became known on May 21, 2019. The official trailer was released on February 5, 2020.
