The Ministry of Education ( Māori : Te Tāhuhu o te Mātauranga ) is the ministry responsible for the education system in New Zealand and the highest authority for this area. It is based in Wellington .

history

The department was established by the Education Act 1989 on October 1, 1989. It came into being when the Department of Education , in addition to the Ministry of Education, was split up into six other so-called Education Agencies :

As part of the reforms, the regionally oriented Boards of Education of the school administration were replaced by individual trustee administrations, called Boards of Trustees , for all elementary and secondary schools.

Role of the ministry

The role of the ministry is to raise education levels and reduce inequality in educational attainment. It does not act as an operator of educational institutions or as a provider of educational measures. This role is fulfilled by elected Boards of Trustees in every school in the state education sector. The functions of the ministry include advising the government, providing information for the education sector, providing learning materials, regulating education and its financing, and providing specialists. The Ministry works with other agencies (see above) and Learning Media Limited .

Publications

The ministry publishes, among other things, the biweekly New Zealand Education Gazette , which on the one hand informs the education sector about ministerial initiatives in the field of education and on the other hand reports on practical implementation in schools, day care centers and kindergartens.
