Mirco Zuliani (born February 3, 1953 in Treviso ) is a retired general in the Italian Air Force . From September 2013 to March 2016 he was Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Transformation .

Military background

Mirco Zuliani joined the Italian Air Force in 1974. He completed the officers' course at the Accademia Aeronautica and trained as a jet pilot, first in Lecce on the Aermacchi MB-326 and then the advanced training in Foggia-Amendola on the Fiat G.91 T. The following retraining on the Lockheed F-104 (Starfighter ) at the 20th season in Grosseto , he graduated in November 1980. He was then transferred to the 155th Fighter Bomber Squadron (155º Gruppo) of the 51st Squadron (51º Stormo) in Istrana . In 1983 he was selected to become a test pilot and trained accordingly at the Pratica di Mare flight test center and the Empire Test Pilot School in Boscombe Down, UK . Among other things, he was responsible for the flight tests of the Fiat G.222 transport aircraft and the Panavia Tornado fighter-bomber .

In 1990 he became squadron captain of the 132nd reconnaissance squadron of the 3rd squadron in Verona-Villafranca . In 1993 he was appointed to the air force staff, where he was responsible for logistics and procurement . As a colonel (Colonnello) he was from 1998 to 2000 commodore of the 36th Squadron in Gioia del Colle , with whom he also took part in the mission in Kosovo . He then moved to the staff of the Air Fleet Command (Comando della Squadra Aerea) and was again entrusted with questions of logistics and operational readiness.

In the meantime promoted to Brigadier General (Generale di Brigata Aerea) , Zuliani became Chief of Staff of the Logistics Command in 2003 and then until 2006 Head of the Department for Aircraft, Weapons, Avionics and Logistics. This was followed by a use as a military attaché in Washington, DC . As major general (Generale di Divisione Aerea) he headed a department of the Armaments Department (Direzione Nazionale degli Armamenti) in the Ministry of Defense in Rome from 2009 to 2011 and was responsible for the introduction of new weapon systems. This was followed by two brief assignments, first as head of the flight test center in Pratica di Mare and then as commander of the NATO Combined Air Operations Center in Poggio Renatico , where he was promoted to lieutenant general (Generale di Squadra Aerea) in 2012 . In September 2013, Zuliani was appointed Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Transformation in Norfolk , Virginia , and at the same time " Lieutenant General in Special Service " (four strips, OF-9). On March 24, 2016, he gave up his post to the German Admiral Manfred Nielson and went into retirement.

During his career, Zuliani has completed over 4,000 flight hours on more than 45 different types of aircraft. He has degrees from the Universities of Naples (cooperation with the Air Force Academy) and Trieste ( international relations ). He completed general staff courses at the Scuola di Guerra Aerea in Florence and at the Air War College at Maxwell Air Force Base .

Mirco Zuliano is married and has one son.
