History of the castle, manor and forestry office in Gstatt

In 1394 Gstatt Castle was built as " Probstey " at the foot of the Mitterberg as the seat of the administration for the estates and peasant subjects between Liezen and Schladming.

The lordship was abolished in 1848. In 1892, the Trento shipyard owner Charles François Bardeau, who had already bought Kornberg Castle in 1871 , acquired the Gstatt estate and expanded it from 8,000 hectares to 13,000 hectares. In 1911, Emperor Franz Joseph I elevated him to the rank of count .

During the economic crisis of 1929, the Bardeau family sold the Gstatt forest estate to Count Hieronymus Colloredo -Mannsfeld (1870–1942) from the “Bohemian”, princely branch of the family. His son, Prince Joseph III. (1910–1990), emigrated to Canada as a stateless person after forced labor under the Nazis as well as imprisonment, torture and the expropriation of the Czech family property of Opočno Castle under the Communists, established a new existence there as a fruit and flower farmer and did not move back until 1975 Gstatt property.

In 1988 there was a real division between Kristina Colloredo-Mansfeld (Gstatt Castle with the Mitterberger Forest and the Rohrmoos-Untertal district) and Livia Colloredo-Mannsfeld (Walchen-Prellegg and Schwarzensee districts).
