Mizzi Günther (born February 8, 1879 in Warnsdorf ; † March 18, 1961 in Vienna ) was an Austrian opera and operetta singer ( soprano ) and stage actress .

Life

Mizzi Günther grew up in Reichenberg . She received her training from her future husband A. Fischer, among others. She probably made her debut in 1897 at the Summer Theater in Prague . In the same year she appeared at the Sibiu Theater , where she stayed for two years. She was also married to Fred Hennings .

Her next stage stops were the Venice Operetta Theater in Vienna, Teplitz and Karlsbad . In 1901 she was engaged at the Carltheater in Vienna. There she made her debut as Mimosa in Die Geisha . It celebrated its first major success on March 9, 1901 with the world premiere of the operetta Die Drei Wünsche by Carl Michael Ziehrer . In 1903 she toured Russia with the ensemble of the Carltheater. In 1905 she played Hanna Glawari in the premiere of The Merry Widow .

In the following years Mizzi Günther was considered to be the leading operetta singer in Vienna in the field of soubrette . She sang and acted at the Theater an der Wien , the Volksoper Vienna , the Johann Strauss Theater , the Vienna Citizens' Theater , the Apollotheater and the Raimund Theater . She participated in the following world premieres:

She had her greatest successes as Hanna Glawari in The Merry Widow , in which she was heard well over a thousand times in Vienna and on guest appearances in London and Paris, among others . Other roles were Rosalinde in Die Fledermaus , Bertha in Die Landstreicher by Carl Michael Ziehrer, Flametta in Boccaccio by Franz von Suppè and Harriet in Der poor Jonathan by Carl Millöcker .

In the later years Günther, who was praised for her vivacious performance as well as her voice, was mainly active as an actress. Most recently she was married to chamber actor Fred Hennings . From 1950 to 1952 she was heard several times as a guest at the Vienna State Opera . She was honorary president of the Vienna Lehár Society. In 1955 it was celebrated as part of an anniversary performance of The Merry Widow in the Vienna Volksoper . Her final resting place is in a grave of honor in the Vienna Central Cemetery (married Maria Pawlowski, group 33E, row 17, number 22).

In 2016, Mizzi-Günther-Weg in Vienna- Floridsdorf (21st district) was named after her.
