description

Fivefold, radiärsymmetrische flowering of the three pesky sandwort ( Moehringia trinervia )

Vegetative characteristics

Moehringia species are annual to perennial herbaceous plants . The Moehringia species are mostly relatively delicate plants, which can be quite different in habit . They often grow lawn or cushion-forming. The stems are erect, ascending or hanging.

The opposite leaves are linear or thread-like to almost round.

Generative characteristics

The flowers are solitary or in terminal, loose, zymous inflorescences .

The hermaphrodite flowers are radial symmetry and four or five-fold with a double flower envelope . The four or five sepals are erect, herbaceous and usually more or less skin-margined. The four or five white petals are rounded or pointed at the top, but not edged or two columns. There are two circles with four or five stamens each. The ovary is egg-shaped or spherical. There are usually two or three, rarely four or one stylus.

The capsule fruits open with four to six flaps. These flaps are bent outward or rolled back. There are only a few seeds per capsule fruit. The seeds are red-brown to black, smooth and shiny and often have a white appendage on the navel ( elaiosome , oil body).

The basic chromosome number is x = 12 or 13.

Locations

Most species occur in mountains and in locations with rather moist and humus soils .

Systematics and distribution

The genus Moehringia was established by Carl von Linné . The scientific generic name Moehringia honors the German doctor and naturalist Paul Heinrich Gerhard Möhring .

The plant genus Moehringia belongs to the tribe Alsineae in the subfamily Alsinoideae within the family Caryophyllaceae .

The umbilical gland artem are particularly widespread in the temperate areas of Europe and western Asia to arctic areas. The center of biodiversity is in Europe and the Mediterranean .

There are around 25 species of Moehringia :
