Mohamed Shawky Ali Sallam ( Arabic محمد شوقي; Born October 15, 1981 in Port Said ) is an Egyptian football player on the position of midfielder . He currently plays for Kayserispor in the Turkcell Süper Lig , the top division in Turkish football.

Career

Career start in Egypt

Shawky began his active career as a club soccer player in 1998 in the youth of Al-Masry . There he was active until 2000, before he made the leap into the professional team with play in the Egyptian Premier League , the highest football league in the country. He then played for El Masry until after the 2002/03 season, before receiving an offer from the Egyptian record champions Al-Ahly Cairo , with whom he subsequently celebrated the greatest successes of his career so far.

In his first season with the new club, he made 20 league appearances and four goals. The Al-Ahly Festival began in the 2004/05 season. After scoring three goals in 19 championship games, he became Egyptian champions with the team. He also won the Egyptian Supercup with the team and was the winner of the CAF Champions League in 2005 after the team reached the final of the competition undefeated and defeated the Tunisians Étoile Sportive du Sahel 3-0.

In 2006, Shawky celebrated several successes with the club from the Egyptian capital Cairo . After completing 26 games and one goal, he was again Egyptian champion and also won the Egyptian cup competition and the Egyptian Supercup for the second time. He also won the CAF Champions League in 2006 , where the team again triumphed over a Tunisian club, this time it was CS Sfax . By winning the Champions League, the team also qualified for the CAF Super Cup , which it subsequently also won. Another great success this year was participation in the 2006 FIFA Club World Cup , where they came third behind SC Internacional (1st) and FC Barcelona (2nd).

The game year 2007 also had similar successes as the previous year. Shawky was the Egyptian champion for the third time in a row and was instrumental in the success with 27 appearances and three goals. After the triple in 2006 (championship, cup, Supercup), the team made everything perfect when they did the same again in 2007 and clearly dominated the Cup and Supercup alongside the championship. As in 2006, Al-Ahly won the CAF Super Cup in 2007 after the team was defeated 3-1 in the Champions League final against the well-known Étoile Sportive du Sahel.

Move to England

After the great success with Al-Ahly, various top European clubs became aware of the Egyptian's talent. Shortly before the transfer deadline, Shawky was finally transferred to England to Middlesbrough FC with Premier League play for a transfer fee of £ 650,000 . In an interview at the beginning of September 2007, the Egyptian was visibly enthusiastic about the move to England and hoped for a long and successful time in the country's top football league. With Mido , Shawky had a good friend on the team, with whom he was already in action on the Egyptian national team.

The Egyptian finally made his Premier League debut on December 29, 2007 in a 1-0 away win over Portsmouth FC , when he was on the field for the entire game and already showed good performances. Overall, he was used in five league games during the 2007/08 season, of which he played through the entire match duration in only two. Furthermore, he came to a single use in the League Cup . With the team he reached only a 13th place in the final table.

Although they started the 2008/09 season a little better than the previous season, Shawky did not make the big breakthrough in the team this year. He was used in 13 league games by the end of the season and was able to record one game in the FA Cup and two games in the League Cup. However, he never scored a goal for Boro, the team's nickname. After speculating about Shawky's transfer to another club some time before, it was publicly announced in early January 2010 that Shawky was about to move to Turkey .

Transfer to Turkey

On January 13, 2010, the Egyptian's official move to Turkey, where he had signed a contract with Kayserispor for two and a half years, was confirmed. He made his team debut in a 3-0 defeat in a friendly against Feyenoord Rotterdam on January 14, 2010.

International

In 2001 he reached third place with the Egyptian U-20 team at the junior soccer world championship and was in action in seven games. He made his senior national team debut in 2003 and has so far made 66 international matches, scoring five goals. As with his former Egyptian club Al-Ahly, he also celebrated great successes with the Egyptian national team. In Egypt's successes at the 2006 African Cup and the 2008 African Cup, he was one of the few players who did not miss a single minute.

Furthermore Shawky participated in a variety of qualifiers for the World Championships the years 2006 and 2010 in part. Egypt only narrowly failed to participate in the 2010 World Cup. After the team rose to the next group stage as group leader in the group phase of the second qualifying round, the team scored as many points as Algeria after six games (4 wins, 1 draw, 1 loss) and also had the same goal difference.

Also in the game against each other both had won once, which is why according to the FIFA rules there was no drawing of lots and the winner was determined by means of a playoff in a neutral country (in this case: Sudan ). Algeria won the game 1-0 and qualified for the Soccer World Cup in South Africa . During the Confederations Cup 2009 Shawky was also active with the national team, but retired in the group stage of Group B as the group bottom from the current competition.
