Christy, a single mother of two children and two fathers, tries to get her life back on track after becoming addicted to alcohol and other drugs . She works as a waitress in a restaurant and has a relationship with her boss Gabriel. When she comes home one evening, she discovers that her 16-year-old daughter Violet has a boyfriend and is sleeping with him too. At an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting, she meets her mother, Bonnie, from whom she has not heard from for over two years. Her ex-husband Baxter, the father of her son Roscoe, does not pay any alimony for him because he is constantly broke and tries to pump her up to buy drugs. Christy learns from Bonnie that she has been in contact with Violet for a long time, and that she has been with her boyfriend Luke for a year. After an argument with her daughter, Christy apologizes to her mother, who then shows up at her home and begins to interfere in her life. Christy meets Adam ( Justin Long ) in the restaurant and arranges a date with him. Since this is the first time since she was dry, she is accordingly nervous and inhibited. When it comes to ordering before dinner, Christy Adam has to admit that she no longer drinks alcohol because she was addicted. Then she leaves the restaurant, but Adam finds her in her car. When she then goes home, she drives up to Gabriel in front of her house, who has been jealously waiting for her.
Meanwhile, Bonnie looks after Roscoe and plays with him seventeen and four for money. Soon the boy is broke and when his father happens to drop by, he tries to pump him up. But Baxter wants to play and Roscoe notices that Bonnie cheated while playing. |

Christy is not doing well, everyone seems to have conspired against her. She has problems with her mother, her children, shopping and dining. At the Alcoholics Anonymous meeting, she starts a conversation with Marjorie and tells her about her worries. Marjorie advises her to think about whether it is really always up to the other person, or maybe it is up to you. Then Christy goes inside and realizes that it is true. She begins to apologize and gets understanding from all sides. When she tells Marjorie about her experiences at the next meeting, her mother joins them, and it turns out that Marjorie and Bonnie must have known each other for a long time and are not on good terms with each other. | ||||||||

Christy's car breaks down and she has no money to pay for it to be repaired. When Christy meets with Adam again, they arrange to go on a hike. She wants to take the relationship slow and finds support from Marjorie. But Bonnie has a different understanding of slow and interferes. When they are surprised by a thunderstorm while hiking, they take refuge in a hut. Christy is torn whether she really wants to take it slow.
Violet has a problem with Luke, he doesn't want to sleep with her anymore because he's afraid he might injure the embryo. She asks her mother for advice on how to explain to Luke that it doesn't matter, but Christy has trouble explaining this to her daughter herself. |

Bonnie calls Christy in the middle of the night because she thinks she is pregnant. But after an examination at the gynecologist the next morning, it turns out that she is in the menopause . This gives her a hard time. Even a short adventure with a motorcyclist doesn't help. Eventually she finds a new role for herself as a loyal grandmother and mother.

When the first contractions start at the ball, she and Luke rush to the hospital. Bonnie and Christy want to go too, but Christy can't find her car key. When Alvin looks at the damage to the car, Bonnie starts arguing with him. He collapses and in the hospital it is discovered that he has had a minor heart attack. Alvin is still in the hospital, Bonnie refuses to admit that Christy is right. Violet is already waiting for her back home because her water has burst. So they take her to the hospital, while Christy takes care of Violet, Bonnie goes to Alvin again. He apologizes for what happened in the past, but she is still hesitant. Violet drives the whole hospital crazy and wants to run away. Bonnie forgives Alvin and they kiss deeply. Luke has arrived in the meantime, but can't find Violet because he's high. During the birth, Violet suddenly says that she wants to keep the child after all. Christy wants to tell the adoptive parents, but Bonnie comes along because Violet has already changed her mind. Roscoe is still sad because he won't be an uncle. His father has to comfort him and tells him that not everything went well for him either. When the baby arrives - a girl - Violet takes her in her arms to say goodbye to him. |
