Montenegro is a municipality ( municipio ) in the department of Quindío in Colombia's coffee-growing region (eje cafetero) .

geography

Montenegro lies at an altitude of 1294  m above sea level. NN 10 km west of Armenia . Montenegro is bordered by Quimbaya to the north, Armenia and La Tebaida to the south, Obando and La Victoria in the Valle del Cauca department to the west, and Circasia to the east .

population

The municipality of Montenegro has 41,857 inhabitants, of which 34,385 live in the urban part (cabecera municipal) of the municipality (as of 2019).

history

The region was settled from Antioquia in the course of a settlement movement in the 19th century . Montenegro itself was founded in 1892. Between 1897 and 1904 the place was called Villa Quindío . Montenegro has had the status of a municipality since 1911.

On October 5, 1951, a serious railway accident occurred near Montenegro: After heavy rainfall, a landslide occurred that buried a passenger train . 26 people died.

tourism

In Montenegro is the Parque Nacional del Café theme park . The theme park was established in 1995 and is 13 hectares in size. The aim of the park is to convey and preserve the cultural and historical heritage of coffee in Colombia.
