Salento is a municipality ( municipio ) in the department of Quindío in Colombia's coffee-growing region (Eje cafetero) .

geography

The center of Salento is at an altitude of 1895  m above sea level. NN 25 km north of Armenia and has an average annual temperature of 17 ° C. The municipality is located in the Central Cordillera of the Colombian Andes . The height ranges from 1300  m above sea level. NN up to 4750  m above sea level NN . Salento is bordered to the north by Pereira in the Risaralda department , to the south by Calarcá and Armenia, to the west by Circasia and Filandia and to the east by Ibagué , Cajamarca , Anzoátegui and Santa Isabel in the Tolima department .

The municipality of Salento has 7103 inhabitants, of which 3826 live in the urban part (cabecera municipal) of the municipality (as of 2019).

history

Salento was founded on October 26th 1842 and is the oldest municipality in Quindíos. The region was settled from Antioquia .

economy

The main industries are agriculture and tourism . Mainly coffee is grown . Over a million tourists flock to the place every year.

Salento is a popular tourist destination. It has preserved the traditional architecture of Colombia's coffee zone. In the center is the main square, Plaza Bolívar, with the Nuestra Señora del Carmen church . Calle Real leads off the square and is where most of the old houses and many shops are located.

Salento is the starting point for excursions to coffee farms as well as to the Cocora Valley , which is known for its landscape, in which the Quindio wax palm occurs in particular . In addition, the Parque Nacional Natural Los Nevados can be reached from Salento , a Colombian national park with snow-capped Andean mountains.

The typical food of Salento is trout from the Cocora Valley, served on thin patacones .
