The Monzenbach is a 4.5 km long orographically right (northern) tributary of the Aar , a tributary of the Dill . It rises in the southern Schelder Forest , on the slope of the Wickenhain (435 m), and then flows first between the Dillenburg district of Oberscheld and the Herborn district of Seelbach in a western, then in a southerly direction around the north and west side of the Volpertsberg (426 m) Aar to. Before it flows into the Aar it flows through the district of Seelbach. The stream flows out at Aar-km 19.1 at an altitude of 214  m above sea level. NN .

History

The Monzenbachtal and the surrounding heights were settled in prehistoric and medieval times, and a noble family named themselves after their Monzenbach estate, located on the upper reaches of the stream . This settlement was abandoned over time when its residents moved to nearby Seelbach.

In order to be able to use the valley floor as meadows, it was drained in earlier times and the Monzenbach was alternately relocated to the edge of the valley; This is the reason for today's erratic borderline between the districts of Oberscheld and Seelbach. Of the almost 2 km long “Manorial meadows in the Montzenbach”, only a small part of the lower “Speierbergskopf”, the so-called “Herrenwiese”, has been preserved as a field name . The forced labor on these "manorial meadows" had at the beginning of the 19th century, the people of Eiershausen , Hirzenhain , Wallenfels , Tringenstein , Oberdorf , Eisemroth and over the valley to make.

Environmental aspects

Above the Monzenbachtal there are former pits in which iron stone was once mined, but also two extensive and expanding quarries , "Oberscheld" and "Monzenbach", in which diabase is mined using the opencast method . A third large quarry with an area of around 10 hectares has been in planning for several years on the wooded and so far largely untouched Volpertsberg, which is surrounded by the Monzenbach, geographically between the two existing quarries. This project is resolutely rejected and combated by local environmental and citizens' initiatives because of its feared effects on the landscape, the structure of the landscape and the natural habitat. With the breakthrough of the Oberscheld quarry, which is only 800 m northeast of the Volpertsberg, expected in a few years, through the apex of the Wickenhain, this operation will break through into the upper Monzenbachtal. Only about 500 m south of the Volpertsberg, the Monzenbach quarry is already affecting the small river in terms of its quality and functionality due to extensive overbuilding. An additional quarry on the Volpertsberg would thus also affect the middle course of the stream.
