The bog ragwort or bog ashweed ( Tephroseris palustris (L.) Fourr. , Syn . : Cineraria congesta R.Br. , Senecio congestus ( R.Br. ) DC. , Senecio palustris (L.) DC. , Senecio tubicaulis Mansf. , Senecio arcticus Ruprecht ) is a plant from the genus of ash herbs ( Tephroseris ) and was formerly the old herbs ( Senecio provided).

The bog ragwort is a herbaceous plant that is usually one to two years old, rarely perennial , and reaches heights of between 15 and 120 cm. Their yellow-green stems are sticky, shaggy, thick, hollow and densely leafed. The basal leaves are serrated. The undivided, sessile, fleshy stem leaves are lanceolate and halfway around the stem.

Several cup-shaped partial inflorescences are combined into one inflorescence . The flower heads have a diameter of 12 to 20 mm and contain (twelve to) over 21 zygomorphic ray-flowers and 30 to 50 radially symmetrical tubular flowers . All flowers are hermaphrodite, golden yellow and contain five stamens . The ray florets are usually 4 to 12 mm long and have five corolla lobes. The tubular flowers are usually 3.5 to 8 mm long with a diameter of 0.5 to 1.5 mm and have two to three corolla lobes. The pollination is done by insects. The flowering period extends from May to September. The brown achenes are 2 to 3 mm long, 0.3 to 0.4 mm wide and have a white to off-white pappus that consists of a series of hairs.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 48.

Occurrence

This species has a Holarctic distribution. It occurs in both North America and Eurasia . Its distribution area includes Alaska, Canada and the northern United States, Siberia, Far Eastern Russia, Kazakhstan, European Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, the Baltic States, Sweden, Denmark, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, the Czech Republic, Poland and Romania .

It occurs scattered in northern Germany, rarely in the west as well as in Saxony-Anhalt and Saxony.

The habitat of this species are wet bog meadows , banks, ditches, pond edges and coasts. It can be riparian zones with fresh water as well as brackish water . It thrives at altitudes between 0 and 1000 m. It is a character species of Senecionetum tubicaulis from the Bidention association.

The leaves can be eaten raw as a salad or cooked as a vegetable. Occasionally, fermentation is used to make a type of sauerkraut from the leaves .
